MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING- A Film by JOSS WHEDON. In Theaters June 7.
Shakespeare’s classic comedy is given a contemporary spin in Joss Whedon’s film, “Much Ado About Nothing”. Shot in just 12 days (and using the original text), the story of sparring lovers Beatrice and Benedick offers a dark, sexy and occasionally absurd view of the intricate game that is love.
Saw this tonight. Compares very well to the Branagh version.
Amy Acker as Beatrice, Alexis Denisof as Benedick, Nathan Fillion as Dogberry, Clark Gregg as Leonato, and Sean Maher as Don John.
Acker and Denisof’s skills in physical comedy pay-off here, especially when united with their emotional scope. I think they surpass Branagh and Thomson. They also have the juice from an unrequited love-story on Angel, which adds to the mix, for the old fogeys in the audience.
I really need to watch both of these movies at the same time, to figure out my preferred Dogberry. Michael Keaton was wonderfully mad, and Nathan Fillion was… stump-stupid yet earnest? Both are awesome.
A word or two about Leonato and Don John.
Clark Gregg hit every step I’d planned for Leonato in my own personal mental Globe. Well done, and thank you sir.
Sean Maher, you can ooze evil and still seem to be clean. Cheers, my friend; here’s a toast to making you the next Bond villain.
If you have a chance, see this film. It will reward you.
