We hear of these cases of slavery so seldom, I have to wonder how many are missed.

I’d say there is a 3rd reason: That the US is tired of this kind of domestic slavery by diplomats and wanted to send the diplomatic community a message. And when it comes to law enforcement, one way messages are sent is through harsh arrest and detention procedures.

Then you get the same treatment in their country…and lots of Americans are in India. Lots of potential “legal hostages” who can be charged with local crimes. This is a pissing match we should not have started. India is a world player now…and they will not tolerate their diplomats being arrested and strip searched in blatant violation of the Vienna accords.

If the diplomat broke the law, you deport her. You can ask the maid if she wants sanctuary here. That is it. Period.

I suspect there’s hyperbole involved in some of these stories.

It doesn’t matter. The story is in the media and demonstrations have started. Elections are coming up in India and USA bashing is a gift from the gods for every politician in the country. Anti Americanism has a long, long history in India (to be fair, much of it is wrapped in in anti UK colonialism and we get tarred with the same brush) and retaliation is guaranteed since nobody in office can afford to look soft on US citizens and diplomats now.

Actually, she’s part of the Indian Consulate in NYC, not part of the Indian Embassy to the UN. Given her position within the consulate, the State Department says she only has immunity for actions and items related to her consular function. Her treatment of a maid is not immunized.

It’s true that normally we’d simply kick out a vice general consul who had misbehaved, but we’re past that now. To simply declare her Persona Non Grata now would send an unacceptable message. It would say we don’t truly take domestic slavery cases seriously. If India retaliates, then they retaliate. Our own federal government the city government of New York should stay the course and bring the miscreant to trial.

Update per CNN. The NYPD was not involved in Ms. Khobragade’s arrest or detention. It was entirely a US Marshals show.

For god’s sake, the woman forced her maid into servitude and then tried to enact India’s version of the fugitive slave act on her.

Or the State Department and US attorney’s are jointly in a conspiracy for some fucking reason.

What the hell? When did people get so blase about human trafficking?

As a native of India, I am truly ashamed that country of my origin has decided to direct all their outrage at the US. None at this diplomat who was treating this fellow Indian citizen like a slave.
