I hope this is just a desperation move by Ham for publicity as his Ark Park sinks and Nye isn’t actually going to show up to debate. It just gives he creationists publicity and credibility, and its a lot easier to throw a lot of derp around than it is to scientifically explain why each creationist objection is bs.

If I were Mr. Nye I’d wear a bulletproof vest. These are not people who care much for science. Indeed they regard it as something that Satan has created to undermine Christianity.

They believe they are fighting a war and they won’t miss a chance to take down one of ‘The Enemy’s most visible agents.’

There is no real way to “win” an argument like this- the Creationist side is not beholden to any classical logic or proper debate. The main logical fallacies of Appeal to Authority, Red Herring, and False Equivalency will be on full display and the the Creationist mythology believer will eat it up thinking “AHH-HAA!!! Got him!!” The ultimate question of “well, Mr. Nye. what happened BEFORE your so-called Big Bang? will be sure to be hammered at time and again. The probable answer by Mr. Nye of “we aren’t sure, but we are trying to find out” will be insufficient as the Creationist side is content to have all the answers wrapped up in a tidy convenient easy-to digest answer of “God did it.”

I hope Nye knows what he is getting into here. Just knowing your material isn’t going to be good enough. Most debate formats make it very easy for a creationist liar to spew dozens of points/lies which would take more time to refute than is available (this tactic is known as a ‘Gish Gallop’).

This makes it relatively easy for a creationist to win a debate on points (i.e., lies that weren’t specifically addressed tend to be accepted).

Nye will be chasing Ham doing the Gish Gallop for the entire time and end up looking like a fool. Legitimizing these people by “debating” them is a very bad idea.

I hope Nye is too media savvy to fall for this.

I think Bill should think about a certain saying in the Bible; “Pearls before swine.” They will not appreciate nor want to discuss what they are incapable of knowing.

The Principle: Casting Pearls Before Swine

“Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.” (Matthew 7:6).

Of course, these words of Jesus are allegorical. I doubt that any were literally casting pearls before swine. The meaning is pretty simple to figure out; “Do not persist in offering what is sacred or of value to those who have no appreciation for it, because your gift will not only become contaminated and be despised, your generous efforts could also be rebuffed and perhaps even openly attacked.”

I hope Bill Nye’s people are now trying to talk him out of this.

Publicly debating a creationist is pointless, and only helps these cretins promote their backward ideology.

Concur. Creationists won’t admit error, and their propaganda will always portray the person of science as either the loser or )if he/she wiped the floor with the creationist) as a “bully”. People who won’t listen aren’t worth talking to.

Charles Johnson is absolutely right!
This principle was one embraced by Richard Dawkins after reading about an evolutionist debating a creationist.
The statement was :”that I can’t add to my reputation due to debate ; but your reputation may be enhanced amongst your creationist cronies!

I think the goal (for Mr. Nye) would be to reach people in the audience —perhaps awaken some to reality—not to actually win the debate.

This debate is an exceptionally bad idea. The creationist side consistently debates in bad faith, armed with a mountain of logical fallacies and never admits defeat even when they get their proverbial asses handed to them.

Debating this clown on this subject gives too much credit to creationists and implies that somehow there is actually something to debate in the first place. Creationism isn’t a valid scientific view point and is backed up by zero facts. It is not worthy of being a “side” in any debate.
