The Online Photographer: Tiananmen Square, 25 Years Later
I had an email exchange with Peter T. after our article on Monday about the Leica Gallery opening in L.A., and he sent me these four pictures from Tiananmen Square 25 years ago, with a link to a National Geographic Daily News article titled “Tiananmen Square Still Haunts Photographer Brothers After 25 Years.”
A photographer can, sometimes must be, an irrefutable witness to the triumphs and tragedies of our world. 25 years on, the Chinese government has mostly raised a generation that has no clue of the brutal civil war fought in June of 1989 - and those who do remember are terrified of mentioning it.
We, then, have the duty to remember for them just as we have to remember all the other myriad tragedies of the 20th century.
