Suicide by an overdose of Harper.

This doesn’t bother me too much.
If you are a charity that actually does charity work and are claiming charity status because you are primarily a charity then you issue receipts to donors which they can use when they file their taxes.

If you are a charity that sends a portion of your funds to a third party that actually does charity so you can claim charity while spending most of your effort and funds on protest expenses, advertisements and lobbyists then you aren’t a charity. (to me) so they shouldn’t be able to issue receipts to donors.

If the primary activity of your organization is political advocacy whether it is Global warming, anti/pro-< race/country/ethnicity/religion,economic philosophy>, anti/pro seal hunt then I don’t think it is appropriate to grant the ability to issue a receipt for tax purposes.

Harper has really overstayed his welcome.

Save that Alternatives does no ‘political advocacy.’ Unless taking a stance on Israel that goes against the governing power is ‘political advocacy.’

How would you feel if the NDP, which is far to the left go any mainstream party in the States, decided to cut off the charity status of, say, B’nai Brith Canada because their stance on Israel is different from the NDP’s?

If the Tories are clamping down on ‘political advocacy’ why are they ignoring charities that don’t hold differing views from the government? Why is PEN Canada, a freedom of speech charity, being audited? Why is OXFAM being told ‘preventing poverty’ is not a charitable activity?

Seriously, if charities can’t comment on government policy that is a serious limitation on freedom of speech. Where will such limitations end?

5 Souliren  Dec 19, 2014 8:00:20pm

Where do the end? Where do they start?

There is a power given to charities to issue receipts so that a Canadian who donates money to them can claim it on his personal income tax as a charitable contribution which is a dollar for dollar reduction in his taxable income. (I presume)
I also presume that companies and foundations and other money-giving folks can claim a dollar for dollar reduction in their income by donating to these organizations.

A freedom of speech charity? GIve me a break.

Feed the poor, cure cancer, educate people, help people - ok

If you want to donate money to PEN, that’s ok with me but I don’t feel there is any more reason to deduct that from you taxable income then the twenty you stuck in the stripper’s g-strap.

Never mind the fact that I mostly agree with PEN.

re: #5 Souliren

Wouldn’t a REALLY good way of feeding poor, educating people and generally helping people be preventing poverty? Which is, apparently, according to Harper’s revenue service not a valid goal for charities…

But then you seem to oppose charitable status for any organization that advocates for anything, and only support charitable status for direct actions to aid people. Which is a profoundly silly concept, and not a very economical use of limited resources.

Well I think the government should encourage charity by giving tax exemptions. The non-receipted tax write off is quite low, only about $1,000.

re: #6 Jayleia

You have to draw the line somewhere else the East Havre Boucher Trepanning society can claim charitable status because they sponsor a child in Obsuristan.

As for the preventing poverty kerfuffle… Revenue Canada are being jerks there unless there’s some obscure bureaucrat rule that would be a joke on Yes Minister.

If you want to support an organization whose purpose is raising awareness about environmental issues, you still can. No one is preventing you. You just have to do it with after tax dollars.

I noticed you lumped the science of AGW/CC in with racism.

Nice try.

re: #9 b_sharp

If you want to research or talk about the science of AGW then fine.

If you want to finance protests, pay for hotel bills, flights , protest signs and pay salaries of people whose primary goal is to “raise awareness” then don’t disguise yourself as a charity so you can issue tax receipts.

Here is the Events page for the “charity” featured in the article.

alternatives.ca (past events)

It’s all there isn’t it? Racism, AGW, etc.
