“Apps” is just the 2015 word for “Programs.” You can thank Apple for that.

A Windows 10 in-place upgrade will only upgrade Windows. All your existing programs and data will remain in place.

I say “will,” but it should actually be “should.” Of course any Windows upgrade may go wrong, but Windows 10 is probably the best at it. It creates a separate directory called C:Windows.OLD or something, and then reinstalls C:Windows, and doesn’t touch anything outside those folders. (Not entirely true, it can/may uninstall bloatware) And if the install fails, it (should) simply delete the new C:Windows and rename C:Windows.OLD back to C:Windows and boot fine.

That said, you will probably want to have a list of all your programs just in case.

For anyone else who might be watching this thread:

If you got your free Windows 10 offer for owning Win7 or 8, YOU MUST DO AN IN-PLACE UPGRADE TO TRANSFORM YOUR EXISTING KEY TO A WIN10 KEY.

If you download the installer, and then do a New installation, your key will not work, because it will still see it as a Win7/8 key.

That’s one thing I was looking for. I did the Windows Update method to get to Windows 10. I don’t know where my key is. I don’t know how to tell it to burn me an install ISO. Do I need to go download the install ISO from the Microsoft website? What about my key, do I just use my Windows 8 key if I ever need to reinstall?

I had tried downloading the update twice Friday night. I got a “something stopped” message. I ended up taking the computer to my brother-in-law, who’s my techie. It took HIM two days to finally get the computer to accept the upgrade. I’ll get the desktop back on Thursday and see how things work now.

I was able to upgrade three of my computers to Win 10 with no problems.

When I tried it yesterday on my main computer, it failed catastrophically, with the standard Windows worthless error codes. From looking them all up, I discovered that I should disconnect my second monitor, remove my Nvidia video card and delete the drivers, disconnect everything except the network connection, keyboard, mouse, and the drive I plan to upgrade, uninstall all anti-virus and anti-malware software, delete everything in my Temp file, and edit my registry.

That’s where I stopped reading.
