There are a lot of Bernie Sanders supporters at LGF.

We’re also pragmatic, knowing that if Bernie Sanders doesn’t get the nomination (which he won’t, trust me) that “Berniacs” will still vote for the candidate with the “D” next to their name as opposed to the candidate with the “R” next to their name.

It comes down to these three goddamn words:

SUPREME COURT APPOINTMENTS

I’m pretty sure Bernie Sanders will throw his support towards Hillary Clinton if he doesn’t win the nomination.

Bernie is doing a great thing. He’s running for president against all odds. He’s doing it because he believes in his work, and he cares for Unites States citizens. He’s a great American.

Oh, and welcome to LGF!

Actually, a lot of Berniacs will not be voting for Hillary. H.A. Goodman has an article at Salon: “Hillary Clinton On The Wrong Side of Everything: Stop telling me I have to vote for her because of the Supreme Court.” Berniacs are the Democrat’s Tea Party. We are tired of getting rolled by Third Way Corpratists. IMO, unless Hillary can win without the Berniacs the next President will be a Republican.

If we nominate HRC we have a tough fight, with or without the Bernie kids. If we nominate Bernie we lose. I learned that when I voted for McGovern. (If I could appoint presidents, Robert Reich would get it, or Bernie, or Elizabeth Warren in that order.)

re: #3 One Last Buddha

You don’t want to add Bernie to “The List of Spoiler Candidates that Went on to Fuck Everything Up for the Whole Fucking World”, I LIKE what Bernie wants, I want Bernie to drag the debate left.

If he wins the primary, I’ll vote for him. I’ll vote for Clinton in the primary, though, because I think that she has more of a chance against the Republicans. I don’t really like her though.

But I’ll take someone I don’t like over any of the people in the GOP, all of whom, if you take them at their word will either plunge the US into fascism, bring about the End of Days, or just turn us back into the early-18th century or blow up the world economy, or some combination of all of the above…

THIS IS NOT A HARD CHOICE FOR ME, EVEN IF HILLARY WAS OWNED BY MONSANTO. (note the “if”)

nines09  Nov 12, 2015 • 7:15:35am

If you give a rats ass about anything at all you do the right thing. You keep the cult out of the WH.
If Bernie doesn’t get the nod and you vote for Hillary, that is called compromise. If Bernie doesn’t get the nod and you vote for a Republican (they call themselves that, but you and I know the truth) or withhold your vote, that is called stupidity. Period.

Still exploring the ideological slant. The front page indicates legitimate scorn of the Clown Car, but does not clearly identify a party affiliation. Until I registered I didn’t know there was an article section. FWIW, I was a delegate for Bush 41 to my state republican convention in 1982. I’m a swing voter who can’t abide the political power structure of either party.
My first take on ideology at LGF was that there were a few of the endangered species I call rational conservatives. I should have clarified my reference to The Russell Kirk Institute and Kirk’s Ten Conservative Principles.
I guess the closest description of my current political ideology is Conservative Democratic Socialist with Libertarian tendencies. Don’t you just love political labels?

15
CleverToad  Nov 12, 2015 • 1:56:51pm

LGF ideological slant - taken as a whole, sane and pragmatic.

My personal slant - the primary role of a functioning government is the defense and maintenance of the commons; and the common weal includes providing a safety net that ensures no one in a rich country should be starving. The Dems ain’t perfect, but the current Republicans are posting ‘for sale’ signs on the commons. They’ve abandoned governance for power, and democracy for oligarchy (though they are quibbling about whether the oligarchs are required to pay obeisance to theocracy in social matters, with the understanding that the secular billionaires hold the economic reins). They’re not conservatives, they’re radical reactionaries.

I hope Bernie is saner than his supporters. If we elect a Democrat we can push them left. If the purists sulk in their tents the Republican wins and we’re all screwed with them.

16
Decatur Deb  Nov 12, 2015 • 2:25:41pm

We’re licensed to keep a few conservatives—it’s sort of a raptor rescue project.

17
One Last Buddha  Nov 12, 2015 • 4:14:15pm

Raptor Rescue Project - Yes! If humanity survives the next 20 years that may preserve the faint memory of Teddy Roosevelt conservatism.
Re Clever Toad: Sane and pragmatic is good, but I fear the political, social and economic spheres are no longer susceptible to rational solutions for national and global crisis. I am convinced Bernie is mankinds last hope to prevent global extinction of our species. Even a massive co-ordinated global effort may be too little too late.
The European Union is a basket case dominated by a German austerity stranglehold. Preventing ecological destruction would require a massive combined effort from the U.S., Europe, Russia and China. The necessary financial and scientific solutions require an environmental Marshall Plan that would require a politically unacceptable sacrifice in global standards of living from all industrialized nations.
Bernie is eager to lead the charge, but can he bring the American people and political process around in time? If America does not lead no other nation has the necessary resources. We would have to commit at least half of our military budget immediately. If not sooner.
Ecological destruction is too lucrative and I believe too entrenched globally for any solution short of economic revolution.
Alien archeologists will conclude that homo sapiens were very close to achieving a galactic civilization, but were destroyed by greed.

Sure, you’re welcome to hang out if you’re genuinely interested in joining the community.

A lot of the conversation happens in the thread on the front page articles.

Most of us really are pragmatic, though. Considering yourself the “Democrats’ Tea party” probably isn’t going to win many friends as we watch what the Tea Party is accomplishing in their pursuit of ideological purity.

I’m much more interested in maintaining my right to choose than catering to some purist’s hurt feelings.

24
One Last Buddha  Nov 12, 2015 • 6:00:27pm

I don’t understand why being an old pot smuggler is a problem. That was just a light hearted historical foot note. If I can’t criticize Hillary

I looked into the Iranian stuff. They might be the best of a bad lot. Their postings get dumped because of the drive-by abuse of Charles’ digits.

(Also looked at the Goodman Salon article. It was lame and the commenters gave it short shrift.)

I know that if they actually stayed and interacted and didn’t just dump and run, they’d probably find a fair bit of agreement.

I must have missed the Salon article, but with the Internet out and the writing things have been so off for me this month.

Might be a generational thing. You seem to have a young crowd around here (nothing wrong with that). There seems to be an unusual perspective on my comments that I fail to comprehend.

I’m not that pessimistic. I can’t be. I have a smart 17-year-old that I’m leaving this world to, and I’m going to try till my last breath to make it a livable world.
Yes, it’s going to take unending effort to change national policies, and it’s going to take sane people across the world pulling together on the rudder to keep turning the Titanic in a better direction. But I didn’t expect miracles out of Obama and I don’t expect miracles out of Bernie. The Oval Office doesn’t come with a magic wand.
It’s a long and a hard and a bloody road, but you keep walking. You keep fighting. And if that includes holding your nose and voting for the lesser of the two evils, you keep voting. I’m too old to hold out for perfect.

Wottheheck, I’m from a state where we hold marijuana job fairs now. There’s hope!

Some of us are young. Some of us are not.

Some of us use Twitter. Some of us do not. It’s certainly not required to interact with people on the main threads.

Perhaps you might not think you’re a purist, but you came in, identified yourself as being pro-Bernie, and seem to think that supporting Hillary would be worse than having a Republican in the White House. Judging from the comments you made, anyway. That reads more like a purist than a pragmatist.

Anyway, sorry you don’t feel like you’d fit in. Maybe you’re right, but I think it’s your loss for not sticking around and giving it a try.

So go fuck yourself.

And I would vote for Bernie if he were the nominee, because I’m pragmatic. Take a lesson.

It’s not a problem as far as I can tell. And few, if any, of the commenters here are anti-pot zealots a la Chris “Mussolini” Christie.

The only problem is that you’re being kind of a snarky dick. And someone your age should know you can’t always get what you want. Sometimes, in an election, you have to choose the lesser of two evils. Since there are no Teddy Roosevelt Republicans left, you can vote for Hillary or a far right wing Republican. Or just sit it out and do nothing. And then watch the gop fuck things up like they did 10 years ago. Woo hoo, what integrity!

You’re a liar. From your post at the top:

My worst political nightmare is an election choice between Hillary and Carly. Either choice would be too much like voting for my ex-wife

Their gender is exactly what is unacceptable to you.

Holy moley! What we have heah … a failure to communicate! The reason I dropped back in is … emails! I guess I was “throwing elbows” with comment #6 and I’m now a snarky dick and a lying troll.
As much as I appreciate the warm LGF welcome, please allow me to retort.
I was a delegate for Bush 41 when he lost to Reagan. I left the fold over Reagan’s war on Air Traffic Controllers. I thought David Stockman killed Reagonomics and it refused to die! It returned as Voodoo economics and morphed in to Freakanomics! Now we have the Vampire Squid orchestrating a Predatory Disaster Capitalism.
During the Big Dog’s impeachment I told a buddy that I didn’t leave the republican party, the republican party left me, because … Nascar Dads! I used to kick it with Nascar Dads and our biggest complaint was how low the Big Dog stooped from Marilyn Monroe. That Iis not intened to be offensive. It’s just how Nascar Dads think and talk.
I conceed that lumping Carly and Hillary into the same ex-wife category was a mistake on my part. Don’t kid yourself about the psychological/sociological problems men and women have voting for any woman for President. Is Thomas Frank sexist salon.com?
There are numerous reasons not to trust Hillary.
commondreams.org.

And
smirkingchimp.com
I can’t really argue with being accused of being a snarky dick. Does anyone have a timeline for when snark jumped the shark? I’m just an old dinosaur trying to understand a world gone mad.
Peace Out my friends. Good luck turning The Deep Ship of State around. We gave it our best shot back in the day. I wish nothing but the best for your quest for survival on many levels.

Keep an open mind, enjoy free speech and don’t try to be popular. I sure as hell don’t agree with everything everybody says on this site (what would be the fun in that?).
