The current political climate is contributing to this, IMO. Imagine how we would react id the same thing was happening in a third world country—there would be much tut-tutting & finger pointing. These days even basic civility is snarled at as some sort of freedom-stifling “political correctness” and those who insist on it are painted as weak, whiny, hypercritical thought police or censors. I’m disappointed, but not surprised (sadly).

PEZ said it had over 9,000 eggs on three separate fields, each of which was designated for a particular age group with start times 15 minutes apart…

Sounds like socialism to me. If the kids can’t compete in the free Easter-egg market, that’s their problem. PEZ shouldn’t be picking winners and losers.

re: #2 Sophist, Vogon Poet Laureate

My first thought on reading about it was, “Libertarian/Randian Easter, Somalia style.”

And then people wonder where the jerk kids come from. I coached and reffed soccer, played as a child. Besides the insanity that sport induces, I always thought the best thing the parents could do was drop off the kids. Leave. Sit at a distance, or be nothing but positive, or sit in your car. Let the game be played without you screeching and acting as if your character is being called into question because your kid missed a wide open goal or let another player beat him. Then the other side of the coin are the knuckleheads who force the kids to play a sport they have zero interest in. It always seemed that every pitch had a few loud mouthed know it alls who had zero knowledge and zip class. I actually had to stop reffing, paid and tournament, because I started to look forward to the confrontations. Time to leave. But what did you expect with a Pagan Holiday co-opted by early Christians, with a Bunny King, nonetheless, involving booty that invokes rebirth from death? Magic Eggs. I kid. /

re: #5 nines09

My Pop spent 40 years running youth sports and activity programs for the DoD in numerous locations around the world. He finally retired in disgust at the increasingly horrible behavior of the parents; I can still feel his disappointment and sadness when the subject comes up, two decades later.

But his sense of loss is fueled by the knowledge that the kids are ultimately the real losers.

Mine, too.

re: #6 Slap

Just remind your Pop that without people like him, there would be none at all. Everyone who has given time and effort to youth sports has seen our share. What always amazed me was some of the rudest people would actually ask “Why can’t we get coaches? Where are the “good’ refs/umpires?”
Define “good”. Have someone film you at a match/game. Maybe they want no part of folks like you?
