“A significant number of Canadian hospitals are reusing single-use medical devices and the vast majority of those that do sterilize them in-house – a practice fraught with risk, infection control experts say.
“While there appears to be consensus a national policy is needed and in-house reprocessing ought to be banned, a regulatory void means hospitals in many parts of the country can do as they wish. Among devices being reused are biopsy forceps used in stomach and bowel surgery, membrane scrapers used in eye surgery, breast pump kits and tools used to bore through bone…”
