Think of it as a completely continuous spectrum, from breeding a line of dogs with a single hair color out of a more diverse population, all the way up to the entire family tree of life, from the first living thing down to the entirety of biodiversity that exists. From selecting for a single trait, all the way to the totality of Evolution is all one continous line, from left to right.

Now, arbitrarily draw a vertical line, and say that only things to the left of this can happen.
