They redoubled their efforts after Ronald Reagan threw the fundamenalist Christians off the bus as soon as Nancy’s house astrologer told him the starts were right. They have since insinuated their people into all sorts of positions in government, military, education and other public institutions.

They now have one of their own a heartbeat away from the Presidency.

It’s not just about how aggressively Conservatives have worked for it; it’s about how Liberals didn’t.

But once the draft was ended, white middle-class liberals realized that was the only issue that seriously motivated them. And they returned to their individual lives and careers.

Sure, they still held mostly liberal views on most of the same issues… but they didn’t care enough to really exert themselves. Once they knew they weren’t facing the draft, their sons and brothers and nephews and cousins weren’t facing the draft, all the other liberalish issues were just something to opine about over cocktails.
