Except, I think, that “sterling silver” (I.e., .925 fine) is a later designation.

Though I believe the original “pound”, variously defined was indeed a specific weight of (pure) silver, and that the Anglo-Saxon sceatta, or silver penny, was meant to be about 1/240th of it. Depending, of course, on how capable (and/or honest) the coiners were
