Hmmm I was taught in economics class that the Pound Sterling originally was defined as equal to 240 silver pence and equivalent to one pound weight of sterling silver. Stars had nothing to do with itâŠ
Except, I think, that âsterling silverâ (I.e., .925 fine) is a later designation.
Though I believe the original âpoundâ, variously defined was indeed a specific weight of (pure) silver, and that the Anglo-Saxon sceatta, or silver penny, was meant to be about 1/240th of it. Depending, of course, on how capable (and/or honest) the coiners wereâŠ.
