Bob Goldstein runs a lab at UNC Chapel Hill and has done incredible work on the Tardigrade (and much more.) He was kind enough to review my work to make sure I didn’t screw the science up too much! I wish I could have included more of his work on the evolution of Tardigrades - but I hope to do that in a future episode on arthropods.

I’ve been checking the stats and maths and I’m going to make a prediction: the team with the most points at the end of regulation has a 100% chance of winning the Superb Owl. I said what I said.

well, the girl downstairs who hasn’t seen Jesse in awhile said, upon her appearance through the balcony slats “looks like she’s put on some weight!” so I guess my cat is living right. I definitely try not to overfeed her, so I hope it’s just domesticated weight from no longer having to live rough.

Just a little while ago, a M3.3 quake in southeast Texas:

earthquake.usgs.gov

Not really much of a history of anything in the area.

One thing though - this region southeast of Austin and San Antonio has seen a lot of recent high-tech production of fossil fuels. When I first noticed it on night-time satellite images I was surprised at how well lit this entire part of the state appeared on satellite, looking more like an urban area. Turns out each little drilling/pump pad has lights on at night, making for a lot of light pollution.

I wonder if the drilling/extraction/injection is starting to cause quakes in this part of Texas?

The gold star in the middle is the location of the quake. Depth about 5 kilometers.

All those little white squares? Most of those are pads for drilling or for pumps:

re: #8 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

I grew up in southeastern and central Ohio. They never had earthquakes or tremors until after fracking began at the outer edges of Appalachia after I left. And of course bringing that up to people who live there(it’s very red state America) provokes jobs and how good they pay talk, and so a lot gets ignored. Like toxic drinking water and crumbling infrastructure. Or lots of babies in certain places dying or getting sick or an uptick in miscarriages, or water that doesn’t run clear out of the tap. Sigh. So yes, it’s really likely that fracking will eventually effect everything around it.

re: #13 A Mom Anon

In the part of SE Texas I include on that map there has been over the past 4 years or so several earthquakes, most smaller than the one just a short while ago.

You can see from the platform locations that the drilling is following where hydrocarbons will be slowly working their way upward - presumably some sort of boundary between rock types. (We have a geologist lurking about around here somewhere… maybe he’ll add more to this story later.)

So yes, quakes indicate faults… faults are probably highly useful to hydrocarbons wanting to move.

The question is whether the drilling and/or injection is causing an increase in possible quakes.

Husband found two Kirk Hammett(guitar player for Metallica) ones that were rare enough that he managed to pay for almost all of the ones he’s bought when he sold them. Some of those things become very valuable after they stop making them for a short time. But we are going to have to build huge shelves or something for these things if he doesn’t stop, lol. And here I am trying to downsize….

I concur. Twitter doesn’t want to be named as an accessory for not having taken action against these idjits. Section 230 protects them from liability over user-contributed content, but that doesn’t mean an enterprising lawyer wouldn’t find a way to sue them for major moolah if it can be demonstrated that a company was so negligent in enforcing its policies that it caused actual damages.

I going with yes. The awful people they have banned have never been LESS awful, that’s for damned sure. They could have done this at any time at all, but chose not to because there are no consequences, hell it was good for business. Until it wasn’t. It’s too bad we, the public, can’t sue the social media companies for the damage they have caused.

SDNY is currently being run by an appointed prosecutor after Trump’s last choice resigned; but before doing so, Berman and Trump interfered in the investigations via Barr and that means that every last decision on investigating and indicting Trumpworld figures is suspect because of the interference from Barr and Trump.

Trump was an unindicted coconspirator in the Cohen felony case. Trump was the named coconspirator with Cohen. Cohen was charged and prosecuted for conspiracy.

There’s no conspiracy of one. It takes two or more people, and in Cohen’s case, the second person was Donald Trump.

That’s why this stinks to hell and back.

she haz a sad because the GOP made her say publicly sorry/not sorry for the Q shit and she still lost her committee assignments.

It sounds like she is channeling DT or tweeting what he would say.

I think she is trying to sound like Ivanka, or maybe Alexa.

I drove without a seat belt and no one hit me…..today

[Embedded content]

I drove drunk and didn’t get into an accident. I’m a great driver, and I’ll keep doing this obscene behavior. Hey, it’s not like I can’t die slipping and falling in my own driveway.

/////////

Refusing to mask and lying about the efficacy of masking and social distancing is akin to ignoring the risks of drunk driving and proceeding to drive under the influence.

You’re not only risking your own life, but your passengers, and anyone in any other vehicle or pedestrians. It’s the same with covid. You could get sick. You could sicken your friends/family or neighbors or complete strangers, like those restaurant workers who have been among the hardest hit groups by the pandemic both in terms of the costs and the health consequences of dumbfuckers refusing to properly mask/social distance.

No friends or family over. It’s just the Mrs. and I. I made a turkey “chili” stew with the slow cooker, and a no knead cran-walnut bread is in the oven.

Blue Moon and Guinness are available.

And we’ll probably end up watching B5 instead of the Super Bowl. It’s not like I follow the league any longer, and I haven’t missed it. It’s an excuse to get together and see friends or family. That’s about it. But not this year. Don’t have to worry about drunk drivers either.

Or the snow (we got about 6 inches in all).

re: #85 Backwoods_Sleuth

There are various theories regarding the origin of the term “pound sterling”. The Oxford English Dictionary states that the “most plausible” etymology is derivation from the Old English steorra for “star” with the added diminutive suffix “-ling”, to mean “little star” and to refer to a silver penny of the English Normans.[10][11][12]

Another argument that the Hanseatic League was the origin for both the origin of its definition and manufacture, and in its name is that the German name for the Baltic is “Ostsee”, or “East Sea”, and from this the Baltic merchants were called “Osterlings”, or “Easterlings”.[13][14] In 1260, Henry III granted them a charter of protection and land for their Kontor, the Steelyard of London, which by the 1340s was also called “Easterlings Hall”, or Esterlingeshalle.[15] Because the League’s money was not frequently debased like that of England, English traders stipulated to be paid in pounds of the “Easterlings”, which was contracted to “‘sterling”.[16]

Encyclopedia Britannica states the (pre-Norman) Anglo-Saxon kingdoms had silver coins called ‘sterlings’ and that the compound noun ‘pound sterling’ was derived from a pound (weight) of these sterlings.[17]

Hmmm I was taught in economics class that the Pound Sterling originally was defined as equal to 240 silver pence and equivalent to one pound weight of sterling silver. Stars had nothing to do with it…

I know that all too well. I still have brainwashed relatives who insist that Trump is still president and he will be sworn in for his second term on March 4th—as the 19th President following Grant who surrendered the US to control of the British Rothschilds with the enactment of the DC Corporate Charter act of 1871…

Except, I think, that “sterling silver” (I.e., .925 fine) is a later designation.

Though I believe the original “pound”, variously defined was indeed a specific weight of (pure) silver, and that the Anglo-Saxon sceatta, or silver penny, was meant to be about 1/240th of it. Depending, of course, on how capable (and/or honest) the coiners were….

The professor that taught monetary theory was a disciple of Murray Rothbard and preached the gospel of Anarcho-Capitalism based on the gold standard supplemented by silver coins. He also wanted nickels and pennies made from silver…

everyone knows there’s competence at the helm

“Two in 3 Americans approve of President Biden’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic, according to a poll by ABC News-Ipsos, with widespread support for his efforts to pass a relief bill.”

“Biden’s 67% approval on handling the coronavirus contrasts sharply with how Americans felt President Donald Trump handled the pandemic. In October, 61% said they disapproved of Trump’s response to the coronavirus.”
