Sound insight. Human nature doesn’t change, technological wonders notwithstanding. The internet and World Wide Web facilitate those who are technologically skilled, and talented and persistent communicators. (Think Obama.) That doesn’t necessarily include those who are truthful.

We could limit a lot of the damage by enabling the other feature of www architecture that never was implemented: the virtual identity system. A website is a location. A web identity links the virtual personality to a person in the real world. That means virtual entities can be made accountable for their communications online.

It’s a two-edged sword, because it ends anonymity online. I’d argue that virtual anonymity is rapidly becoming an illusion anyway.
