Interesting. I haven’t been following all this long enough to watch a true wonk become a hack, really. I imagine one might either become a hack by succumbing to lazyness due to easier successes, or by exchanging a big tent and challenging peer group for one more partisan.

That first one is the worry in re: EK. He’s had some stunning success for someone only— what, 26? 28?

Probably some of this worry is just due to lingering suspicion whenever someone is picked up by major media outlets. I guess it’s the lefty political blogger’s version of “That band used to be great, then they got a major record deal before I did! Sellouts!” /
