that’s a fair assessment, but I don’t agree with the last part. I’m not sure the TP/GOP leadership is capable of learning from its mistakes. They’ve been touting the same “trickle down” economic theory since Reagan’s years, a theory which when applied ruins the economy. They offer lip service to minority outreach, but do everything in their power to screw minorities over. And on and on.

Their big mistake with Trump was to see him only as the means to an end, to recapture the White House. They saw how he could energize the crowds, and thought that would translate into votes. They really didn’t like him much, but they held their noses and offered their support. No one apparently bothered to look into his closets to see what skeletons lurked there, and how those skeletons would damage his campaign and the party supporting him.

If Trump 2.0 appears in 2020, I’m pretty sure they’d do the same thing again.

The reason that the GOP won’t remake itself into a party more welcoming to women and minorities is that its present model is enormously successful; the GOP probably holds more elective offices now than it ever has before. Its nearly impossible to change course with that kind of success, even if you can see that the bridge is out up ahead. That leaves the GOP vulnerable to another demagogue in its 2020 Presidential primaries, especially since much of the base despises the GOP establishment.
