Who defends “In God We Trust” if not conservatives?

The Religious Right, which is quite different from conservatives per se. After all, it’s not a matter of conserving ancient US history; In God We trust only became the official US motto in 1956 in the throes of the now-defunct Red Scare, replacing the long standing de facto US motto, E. Pluribus Unum (Out of Many, One).
