Here’s the issue: the cop has 911 caller outside on the sidewalk. She claims someone is breaking into THAT HOUSE. Cop walks up to the house, has no idea what the situation is. The guy could be a burglar or worse he could be the owner of the house with a burglar in side it.

The cop asking for Gates to step outside was reasonable. Was reasonable for the cops safety, was reasonable for Gates’ safety.

Very good point. How did the cop know that there wasn’t a burglar still in the house—with a hostage!
