It was a dime when I was a kid. My hometown had a phone booth on every corner of main street. The bars all had them. A few bars still have the booths but the payphone isn’t there anymore. People still use the booths to shut out the noise when they make cellphone calls :-). Repurposing!
When our local Walgreens was built about 12 years ago, it had a a pay phone on the outside of the building. They took it out about 7 years ago —it seemed to attract loiterers.
go figure.
