[…]

The six defendants are Kong, 51; deputy senior pastor Tan Ye Peng, 42; former CHC fund manager Chew Eng Han, 55; former CHC finance managers Serina Wee, 38, and Sharon Tan, 40; and former CHC finance committee member John Lam, 47.

We were talking about philanthropists like Bill Gates a couple of days ago. Well, I just ran across this BBC report about another Microsoft dude, John Wood, who co-founded Room to Read. I had no idea this organization existed until I saw it mentioned in connection with malalafund.org on Medium.

bbc.com

Wood quit his M$ job to bring books and libraries to Nepal. I reckon he’s still pretty well off, with stock and all, but I admire his decision to quit a corporate job to devote himself to doing good, probably for much lower pay.

Well, UpChuck and Pammy won’t need to worry about Ahmed Mohamed building any more “clock bombs” — he’s moving to Qatar. Yay, America!!

Ahmed Mohamed, the 14-year-old Muslim boy from Texas whose teacher mistook his homemade clock for a bomb, will move to Qatar with his family.

Ahmed has accepted a scholarship from the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, where he will study.

bbc.com

He’s got a free ride for both high school and college from the foundation. Probably will grow to invent some fancy shit, win a Nobel prize, or something … and he’ll do it someplace besides here.

I’m happy for him, but I would have preferred he stay here in the States, despite its occasional unfriendliness.

Shortages and legal fights over drugs and their source are occurring in several states, among them Arkansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma. Yet capital punishment supporters say older methods such as hanging, electrocution and the firing squad are still viable options. “We’ve got plenty of electric and plenty of rope,” said state Sen. Bill Seitz, a Cincinnati Republican.

Actually, I do not understand why McKesson thinks they should talk about this.

Regardless of his self-described intentions, Snowden has demonstrated poor judgment and inadequate planning skills, and that’s leaving aside his propensity for exculpatory whining. The damage he’s done is far out of proportion to any benefit that might have been argued for his revelations. I don’t see why a competent person would consider Snowden a reliable source of information or a reasonable voice in the discussion.

It’s possible McKesson does not understand that Snowden is ultimately a Russian government mouthpiece right now. If he is allowed to participate in a public forum, it’s something he’s allowed to do because Russia is working an angle. Given McKesson’s own profile, that angle would likely be lambasting Americans as murderers.

Of course that’s just one angle, as another is trying to use people like Deray McKesson to cripple US intelligence-gathering efforts. There’s probably more angles I don’t see. Regardless, Deray McKeson needs to stay away from the Snowden Operation.

Revisionist history is wrong, regardless of who does it. Doesn’t matter if Bibi is the one doing it or Abbas (or other Palestinians).

They’re all reaching for the revisionist history because all of their failings are showing through in the current spasm of violence. They are incapable of doing anything about it, so they’re resorting to claiming that the Grand Mufti was the one whispering in the ear of Hitler to resort to genocide - as if Hitler wasn’t already on that path before the meeting). Meanwhile, you’ve got Palestinians and the PA claiming that the Temple Mount was never the site of any Jewish Temple or history, despite 2+ millenia of proof (and the archaeological data to back it up) in their latest filings with UNESCO on the Temple Mount and its environs as World Heritage Site.

There’s just so much BS that anyone should have to listen to, and it’s at its breaking point. Israelis and Palestinians both deserve better. While the Palestinians have so far been unable to do anything other than stumble along without elections, the Israelis have voted for this continued insanity.

If a landslide happens and no one is present to see it, does it still happen? Yes, especially if it was one of the largest landslides in the world and it registered as an earthquake:

Early last week, around 45 megatons of ice and rock plunged down the southeast flank of Mount Steele in Canada’s Yukon Territory. The avalanche, which occurred in a remote and unpopulated area, was so large that it was initially detected by earthquake seismometers.

The Mount Steele avalanche happened on October 12 and was detected by Colin Stark and Goram Ekstrom of Columbia University using the global seismic network, a digital seismic network of over 150 stations that provides free, real-time data through the IRIS DMC. The avalanche was later confirmed by Landsat 8 satellite images, which shows a huge chunk of rock and ice displaced from the mountainside.

As reported at the AGU’s Landslide Blog, the landslide was enormous. An estimated mass of about 60 million tonnes—the equivalent of 700 aircraft carriers—careened down the mountain over the course of 110 seconds. That’s about 24 million cubic meters in terms of volume. The peak velocity of the avalanche is estimated at about 60 m/sec, which is about 220 km/h or 137 mph.

What pisses me off is other groups- nationalities and religions both collaborated with the Nazis and no one uses that against them the way the Mufti is against Palestinians and Muslims in general. Bibi knows that. He’s trying to create ethnic and religious responsibility. Plus he ignores that Hitler who never even took his military commanders advice wasn’t going to take orders from a foreigner especially an Arab. Bibi isn’t helping matters at all. You’re right LH. Both the Israelis and Palestinians deserve better leaders than what they have. I firmly believe that most people in both groups want peace but both leaders make it worse.

Saw the latest polls in the GOP race and found myself marveling at how much has changed in a year. 12 months ago, everybody was sure the race was Jeb!’s to lose and anybody who suggested Donald Trump would be a serious candidate was laughed at. And six months ago, everybody was sure that Trump was in the “fall” portion of “rise and fall” and Jeb! would still win the nomination based upon his being the establishment candidate.

And now I find myself imaging, a year from now, “moderate” Republicans seriously trying to sell us on the shit sandwich that is a Trump nomination. To be fair, back in 1989, cellphones were as rare as hens teeth in the US. The majority of those who owned them either were rich or worked for people who were. I remember when car phones were a big item for the well-to-do, the idea that you could make a phone call from virtually anywhere. Touchscreens were only starting to make the transition from labs to stores, computers smaller than a briefcase-sized laptop were still a pipedream, and the Internet was the realm of college students and government labs.

That’s the thing about future predictions, they generally are extrapolations of the point in time they’re made, relying upon then-existing or theorized advances in science/technology. Like how, back in the 50s and 60s, you see a lot predictions about computers still being hulking monstrosities, as the microprocessor was still years down the line.

I do have to say that the Star Wars films have aged well, certainly compared to the Buck Rodgers space fantasies of the 30’s over a similar time span.

Disagree, they are front runners. Trump’s been consistently leading the pack since the summer and showing no signs of giving it up as we approach winter. This is different than the not Romney flavored.

re: #47 lawhawk

It’s the Prisoner’s Dilemma with the world players calling odds and trying to perpetuate the game to maximize their winnings.

I’m serious.

And I bet they are all good Christian politicians that are in Church every Sunday praying to their God to help them follow all his dictates like those Ten Commandments.

We will see what happens but I think we both can agree that Trump has done better than anyone expected him to do so. I think part of this is the vaccum in GOP leadership. There is no clear cut next in line for the job. One (Ryan) turned down a presidential run and the other is Rick Santorum who has scant appeal and whose appeal last time was that he was not Mitt Romney. Another part is Trump has a lot of funds. I expect Carson to fade but I think Trump will be in this for the long run.

It’s been amusing to watch for sure. Never thought Trump and Carson would be the front runners and establishment guys like Jeb would be doing so poor. I’m not totally surprised Jeb’s underperformed so far in that the GOP electorate has changed since his last run and campaigns themselves but I was not prepared for how stupid he can be.

I’ll admit the Trump lead has gone on longer than I expected. I still don’t think he’ll be the nominee. I am a bit surprised that the GOP electorate is not as of yet turning to more “conventional” conservatives like Paul and Cruz. And of course I thought Walker would be the main Jeb! challenger. I thought Perry would be a strong candidate in 2012, but his flame-out then made his campaign this year much less viable. Not really surprised Huckabee isn’t doing particularly well—he’s been out of office for a long time, has run before, the energy seems to be towards fresh faces.

I think Carson could win the nomination. I don’t think he will.

If the GOP nominates Carson or Trump (or Carly or Paul or Cruz for that matter) it would be a pretty radical break with their history of usually nominating the next man up. Yes, they can nominate crazy for VP. But usually the head of the ticket is well established presence (HW Bush, Dole, McCain, Romney, even W Bush had the name). Even Reagan, by 1980, was far from some fringe candidate. He’d been governor of California for two terms, been a prominent political activist and spokesman for decades. He made a surprisingly strong race for the nomination in 1976, etc.

But we may be in a new world.

Interesting, and somewhat alarming….

The NYPD Is Using Mobile X-Ray Vans to Spy on Unknown Targets

Dystopian truth is stranger than dystopian fiction.

In New York City, the police now maintain an unknown number of military-grade vans outfitted with X-ray radiation, enabling cops to look through the walls of buildings or the sides of trucks. The technology was used in Afghanistan before being loosed on U.S. streets. Each X-ray van costs an estimated $729,000 to $825,000.

The NYPD will not reveal when, where, or how often they are used.

“I will not talk about anything at all about this,” New York Police Commissioner Bill Bratton told a journalist for the New York Post who pressed for details on the vans. “It falls into the range of security and counter-terrorism activity that we engage in.”

He added that “they’re not used to scan people for weapons.”

While Bratton says they’re not used to scan for weapons, he doesn’t say what they are used for - or where, or how often, or on whom.

Since leaving the White House, George W. Bush has taken pains not to insert himself into the events of the day. Not to weigh in. Not to utter statements bound to become headlines.

When he breaks that habit, you perk up and wonder why.

He broke it in regard to Ted Cruz.

(snip)

He described Cruz as cynically opportunistic and self-serving. And this assessment was so starkly at odds with Bush’s anodyne, even warm, remarks about other Republican presidential candidates that listeners were stunned, wrote Politico’s Eli Stokols.

Bush reportedly summed up his sentiments about Cruz, who worked as a policy adviser on Bush’s 2000 presidential campaign, with this blunt declaration: “I just don’t like the guy.”

while trying to establish a monopoly on the marijuana agricultural market.

Ohio is a state of contradictions. Not that they are somehow different in that …

ggt, did you see the articles I linked on Saturday when you first made mention of the monopoly in Ohio Issue 3?

It is not as clear as some articles state that it is a monopoly. The politicians are pushing the word monopoly. The backers of the issue state in their mailings:

“10 grow sites that compete with one another is only the beginning. If growing facilities are not meeting consumption and market demands after 3 years, the independent state Control Commision can add additional licenses until demand is met.”

The word monopoly allows another group that wants to kill the whole idea to put up Ohio Issue 2…which prevents the initiative process from being used for personal economic benefit. Issue 2 if passed will attempt to kill Issue 3 if passed.

All I can say is it is more politics. Many say if they can get Issue 3 through it can be tuned up as far as the language about how the growers are licensed, etc.

We all bought into Jeb! being the smart brother. I have seen nothing at all that supports that supposition. Nothing.

I’ve actually come to the opposite conclusion hat George was the smarter brother all along. I mean neither are smart like their Dad is but I think Dubya is smarter than Jeb at least political IQ wise. I’ve seen Jeb appear on Hugh Hewitt and whine about people who have a problem with the Washington Redskins name? Because that’s leadership ya know and then how Jeb tried to get out of his “anchor baby” comment by acting like no one could call him a bigot for saying because his wife is a Mexican immigrant and then he really stepped in it by insulting Asians. Jeb’s intelligence I think was greatly overestimated. His defenses of his brother over 9/11 are pretty weak too. He comes off as someone defending a brother accused of stealing cookies not having been President during 9/11. I mean I get Jeb is between a rock and a hard spot when Trump outright blames his brother for the attacks but insisting “My brother kept us safe” when it’s easy as hell to point to the dead people on 9/11 just makes him foolish looking.

The NYPD Is Using Mobile X-Ray Vans to Spy on Unknown Targets

While Bratton says they’re not used to scan for weapons, he doesn’t say what they are used for - or where, or how often, or on whom.

Often the public can’t be told for critical intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) tech is used, because the public knew then gangs and terrorists would change how they operate in order to make the tech less effective.

That’s one reason to avoid giving out certain details about how the equipment works, but there’s a serious health component since it’s using radiation to scan vehicles/equipment and potentially people as it goes through the City. There’s a further issue of privacy and unreasonable searches, and a backscatter x-ray on a public street without the person’s knowledge may be an unreasonable search.

The vehicles might also be able to scan buildings, which would increase the likelihood of violations of civil rights.

I get using a vehicle like that to scan a car that may already be suspected of having weapons, explosives, or drugs - but doing so to a line of cars just because the NYPD has the tech? That seems to be testing the bounds of civil rights/protections of the public and an infringement on the public.

This is not the CIA we’re talking about here, it’s a city police force. Just because they’re using military-grade equipment does not make them subject to the same shield of law.

I would think that Kyllo vs. U.S. would cover the use of this technology. Would I be wrong?

The Supreme Court today, in Kyllo vs. U.S., ruled that authorities scanning a home with an infrared camera without a warrant constituted an unreasonable search barred by the Fourth Amendment.

It did so, the court said, because the device is not in general use by the public, so Kyllo had an expectation of privacy, and because the imaging provided by the camera revealed details about Kyllo’s home “that would previously have been unknowable without physical intrusion.”

I’ve been leery of the new chemicals. Technically, they really don’t work any better and still have to be reapplied as often. I’ve stuck with the baby/gentle version every year.

I haven’t noticed much difference. I don’t like using too much anyhow. If I get burned, I get burned.

It would, but they’d probably argue that it doesn’t apply to cars parked on a public street (and they’d probably test that all the way through the courts). Oh and if they manage to get a hit on a building, shed, or other structure nearby, then so be it.

Sunscreen contributing to decline of coral reefs, study shows

seems it’s the newer sunscreens that have the chemicals. The “gentle” or “baby” versions only have traditional titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Those chemicals aren’t mentioned.

Speaking of sunscreen, another whacko conspiracy theory came to my attention last week. Where I was working, they had “health briefs” on the stall doors in the bathrooms. One was advising using sunscreen and somebody had gotten out the Sharpee to write over it that government/big pharma puts cancer-causing agents in all sunscreen, so you should never use it.

Exactly what I meant. Jeb! is not politically smart in any way (as evidenced by what you said above). Nor is Jeb! smart in an intellectual way. I am starting to think he is more rock like than rock-star like. I am shocked at how dumb he is…in pretty much all respects, Katie. :-)

I got an official white house email, signed by Michael J. Fox!

We’ve come a long way since 1985.

When Marty McFly and Doc Brown traveled 30 years into the future, we could only imagine the innovations we take for granted today — new ideas and technologies that have completely changed the way we live, learn, and work.

Back then, if you’d have told me that I’d go from talking on a cell phone to talking cell biology, I would never have believed you. But today, The Michael J. Fox Foundation is helping to spearhead research collaborations to speed a future in which we can treat, cure, and even prevent brain diseases like Parkinson’s.

So what’s possible in another 30 years? Call me an optimist, but I believe that by 2045 we’ll find the cures we seek — especially because of all the smart, passionate people working to make it happen. Doctors and researchers around the world are developing new tools to improve the diagnosis and treatment of brain diseases, to tailor treatments — for all illnesses — through precision medicine, and to make life better for millions of people. This truly is the stuff of the future.

I’ve never really been in an area with too many reefs. HAd no idea about sunburn being that common among divers but then again I do hear about skiers and snowboarders getting burned a lot. For the long time, I had the misconception that sunburns were realted to how hot it was outside.

The German government said on Wednesday that responsibility for the Holocaust lay with the Germans, after Israel’s prime minister sparked controversy before a visit to Berlin by saying a Muslim elder had convinced Adolf Hitler to exterminate Jews.

“All Germans know the history of the murderous race mania of the Nazis that led to the break with civilization that was the Holocaust,” Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokesman Steffen Seibert said when asked about Benjamin Netanyahu’s remarks.

“This is taught in German schools for good reason, it must never be forgotten. And I see no reason to change our view of history in any way. We know that responsibility for this crime against humanity is German and very much our own.”

<blockquote>Earlier this year, Home Depot charged an Oregon customer a $28 late fee for allegedly missing a payment on his store line of credit. The subsequent dispute over that fee resulted in more fees, a 100-point drop in the customer’s credit score and now a $250,000 lawsuit against the retailer.

According to the complaint [PDF] filed earlier this month in Multnomah County, OR, the customer claims that until April 2015, he’d regularly paid his Home Depot bill in full each month.

Then, after making a purchase of $115, the customer says he scheduled an online payment through his bank to pay the full balance on his card on April 26.

IIRC, a payment has to be considered paid on the post mark date if mailed thru the USPS. (at least that is how it used to be).

The Dark Side of Drug-Free Zones the Government Doesn’t Want You to Know

According to the investigation, nearly 75% of the entire state of Alabama is now designated a drug-free zone, with the six cities of Montgomery, Decatur, Tuscaloosa, Mobile, Birmingham and Huntsville each having 75% or more of the city limits in such a zone. In Montgomery and Decatur roughly 95% of the city is covered.

&

Alabama has the farthest-reaching drug-free zones, setting a three-mile radius around schools, colleges, and public housing. This has resulted in 73% of the state being covered by these zones. Pick a random location in Alabama, and about three times out of four, you could be subject to a five-year mandatory-minimum prison term - with no possibility of parole - for selling illicit drugs in that area. Because drug-free zone-related charges often carry such a heavy sentence, they can easily be used as a threat by prosecutors who coerce defendants to plead guilty to lesser charges.

See, I thought it would be Walker because I thought Walker would be someone who would have sway with the both the establishment and TP types.

I also saw him as the potential front runner, but then again, I thought that Rick Perry was gonna walk away with it in 2012.

Rubio’s chances are much greater than I first thought they would be. He seems kind of a lightweight to me, but he might be their best compromise, i.e. default, candidate.

And we all know how much enthusiasm a default candidate will whip up!

I also thought PErry would end up beating Mitt but I underestimated his stupidity and Mitt’s abilities to outwingnut his rivals. Remember Perry actually sounded reasonable on immigration for a GOPer until Mitt outwingnutted him.

I think Trump and Carson are at their ceilings. One would pick up the other’s votes if he dropped out, but I also think that some of their supporters will tire of the act and go back into the mainstream GOP cesspool. Rubio/Jeb?/Cruz have to hang on long enough for the fringe candidates to start dropping out before their numbers will finally start to climb. My guess is it will come down to Rubio/Jeb?, and Rubio will eventually get the nomination. Ugh.

So what about pregnant women that me be in the path of this thing (and not visibly pregnant)? So sorry, too bad? Some of our PDs are really out of control.

That’s the salient point, right there. Dark’s protestations to the contrary, it’s really not acceptable for a city PD to be driving around, shooting X-rays at the (presumably) guilty and innocent alike and refusing to let anyone know where it’s happening.

The military should just buy back all those toys they clearance saled to police departments. That’s a can of worms that never should have been opened.

This is an interesting debate. We let corporations get away with virtually no taxes. Then we want to tax profits made outside the country (which apparently no other country does). I get his point and in a lot of respects, he’s correct.

We need to fix the tax system so corporate welfare stops and they actually pay original taxes (and the whole “we have the highest taxes in the world is bullshit. After all their deductions we pay some of these freaking corporations). Taxing funds coming back into the country is not how to do it.

Interesting question. Qatar is very conservative, like Saudi Arabia, so I wonder if girls are educated past primary school. Wikipedia is not helping me.

VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University) has a campus in Qatar and the Emir’s second wife (he has three) has done a lot of promotion for the campus and did a commencement speech for the Monroe Park (Richmond, Virginia) campus several years ago. She’s also involved in a lot education-related stuff according to her Wikipedia article:

Sheikha Mozah has been chairperson of the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development since 1995, chairperson of Silatech since 2008, chairperson of the Arab Democracy Foundation, and president of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs since 1998.[4] She has been vice-president of the Supreme Education Council since 2002 and was UNESCO’s Special Envoy for Basic and Higher Education in 2003.[5] Currently, she serves as a member of the Board of Overseers for Weill Cornell Medical College. Besides this, she is chair of Sidra Medical and Research Center in Doha and the organisation “Your Link”.

Unlike many other monarchical wives in the Middle East, Sheikha Mozah has been a high-profile figure in her nation’s politics and society, actively involved in Qatar’s government. She was a driving force behind Education City and Al Jazeera Children’s Channel. She is the owner of Le Tanneur, a French leather-goods manufacturer.[6] Additionally, she has been named as one of Forbes’ 100 Most Powerful Women at #75.[7][8]

As the public consort of the emir, she has represented Qatar alongside her husband and on her own at many international events, including state visits and royal weddings.[9] She has become known for her personal style, customising haute couture designs to fit Qatari modesty rules.[10]

I wonder where Ben learned such sharp political analysis skills.

I always want to yell out “OBNOXIOUS TWIT!”, but sometimes I wonder if it’s some kind of performance art. Everything he says is a series of non sequiturs.

I’d have more respect for him if that was the case, but I think it’s just a honest to goodness douchebag.

I understand what Biden is saying by not seeing Republicans as the enemy, but when they see YOU as the enemy, what choice do you have but to fight back?

Republicans have proved time and again they aren’t rational. I’d even go as far as to say the state of things in Congress is more adversarial now than its ever been before.

Shit I’m far from old but I remember being a kid having to use pay phones if I needed a ride home from school (if I stayed after) or the local shopping centers. I always carried around 35 extra cents just in case.

If the cellphone had a coin release button, you could spin a penny down the nickel slot while hitting the coin release button, and it would register as a nickel.

Do that twice, and make a payphone call for 2 cents.

I think this is honestly part of Biden’s personality. He doesn’t view those he disagrees with in those terms. I dunno if you saw his Yale commencement speech this spring but the Veep even had kind words for Jesse Helms and pointed out that he got so furious at him over an issue but Ted Kennedy took him aside and pointed out that Helms and his wife adopted a disabled boy. And I have to say as much as I dislike the Republican party, I do see what Biden is saying, we all have Republican friends, family, and cowokers who we get along with. Now that said, I also understand completely how Hillary Clinton feels about the GOP too.

They keep talking about the billions that will be saved by eliminating this federal department or that, but in the next breath demand expanding government intrusion into lives in such a fashion that would make the current government seem to be engaging in kids play.

The GOP is so into small government that they want to fit up into lady bits (current GOP orthodoxy, see TV ultrasounds, abortion/birth control restrictions, personhood amendments, etc.).
The GOP is so into small government that they want a political/religious officer in every classroom (the Carson version).

Another fun old trick obviated by new technology - back when I was a courier and had to park at meters a lot, you could shave a penny against the sidewalk or curb and if you did it right, the meter would give you whatever its maximum time was.

re: #402 HappyWarrior

Biden belongs to the more genteel political era where politics was a sport and at the end of the day you could disagree about the politics and still be friend(ly) with your opponents.

The current GOP is not about politics or compromise or the art of the deal (hey, Trump!), but about slash/burn and zero tolerance for dissent. Anyone who even breathes word of compromise is labeled an outside by the current GOP twits - especially in the House, but increasingly in the Senate too - as Cruz all too frequently points out.

Yeah and Liberty actually does censor disisdents. They banned a College Dems chapter simply because the administration didn’t like the Dems pro choice and pro LGBT rights stand. Now why any self-described Dem would attend a shit hole like that is is beyond me but that is actually censorship not a lefty professor who has a view on an issue that challenges wingnut thinking on the suject. The professors who challenged me the most on my beliefs were liberal ones.
