I stopped attending my in-laws’ church with them when visiting because I found out that they do not allow women to vote on any church business — it is a Baptist church in a Houston suburb. We showed up at their house for a weekend visit and my mother-in-law was home alone. When asked where my father-in-law was, she said, “The church is voting on a new Minister of Music, so he went to vote on that.” I asked why she didn’t go with him, since she is MUCH more involved in the church than he is, and she said, “Only the men are allowed to vote.”

I almost fell over. I told my husband I would not go to church their church again. Since I was raised by a single mom, it hit very close to home that my family would have had no representation had we attended a church like that, and it pissed me off to no end. Still does.
