I don’t know if they still do this now, but back in the ‘70’s, when I went through Navy boot camp, they stuck us in a building we were supposed to put a fire out in and handed us a water hose (“Prepare to gooseneck! Gooseneck!”), and then released some tear gas in there to see how we functioned under adverse conditions.

That shit was waaay worse than onions - but we DID hang together as a team, and put out the fire.
