Did we though? I mean in the Cold War, granted I was very young, we still grew up with the Nazis as villain narrative and honestly I don’t think we with some exceptions ever liked the Nazis before 12/7/41. While most Americans were isolationist prior to Pearl Harbor, most Americans still did sympathize with the Allies. I just feel sick thinking about it. My mom and Dad both had uncles who fought the Nazis as Moms Dad was too young and Dad’s Dad was turned down due to some injuries and having a family.

We had glowing pieces about Hitler in the New York Times and American Nazi Party rallies. We had a secret coup against FDR by sympathizers that was barely foiled. The official gov’t position might have been obliquely supportive of the Allies, but we had non-insignificant pockets of Nazi support until we officially went to war and Nationalist sentiment superseded things.

It’s similar to the same lack of reckoning we had with the Civil War and confederate fetishism. It just happened to take longer since it wasn’t a homegrown thing from the start.
