As a lover of Revolutionary Era history- I’m disturbed by this revisionism concerning our Founders and their intent. They most certainly intended for the American people to continue being people of faith- but freedom of conscience was of the highest importance to them- that the people would worship in the manner they felt was best for them- not dictating to the people what faith they ought to be. This revisionism makes me ill.


Sharmuta, I was hearing this “America is a Christian nation” stuff thirty years ago, and I’m sure it predates the 70s. I don’t know if it is a Bircher thing or a product of the anti communist hysteria in the 50s. As I recall we added “In God we trust ” to our coins in the 50s.
