North Korea has both uranium 235 and plutonium. Mix a little plutonium into your U-235 & you get a bigger bang for your buck. I wonder if the US intelligence agency can sniff plutonium in air samples following NoKo’s recent bomb test?
Most plutonium and uranium fallout is going to hit the ground fairly quickly. But byproducts of various types can easily be sampled; you don’t even have to be nearby. Also, analysis of the seismic signature can reveal an awful lot about the bomb’s design.
