I’m puzzled by this statement. On fiscal issues, R’s were actually swinging to the left. On security issues, holding strong, although not perfect. Where was this swinging too far to the right?

Tax policy in a time of war. Lack of regulatory oversight in banking and finance (Lots of blame on both sides of the aisle on the latter, but McCain was too laissez faire. The problem wasn’t going to fix itself.)
