Not really. You can always petition the Tax Court after receiving a statutory notice of deficiency. The question is, is it cheaper to pay the assessment, or is it cheaper to pay the lawyer to fight it?

Thing with IRS it’s their due process, they can declare you in default, and it’s up to you to prove them wrong.
