I think, too, that with a lot of conservatives the “with us or against us” mentality applies - if you question my meme, you must not really be “on the team,” and they don’t want their loyalty to Team Wingnut questioned, so they would rather not rock the boat. Between that and the confirmation bias effect pointed out by Blind Frog above, I guess I can see why so much utterly silly crap gets passed around.
It can be tough to be intellectually honest and rigorous - it can be uncomfortable to honestly question one’s own assumptions or ideas - but if you can’t at least try, what’s the point of having a brain? (Other than to keep my melon from sounding hollow when it gets smacked, that is.)

This business of questioning prior thinking can be irritating. My personal challenge along these lines is I can’t maintain my prior 100% conviction that Heller was wrongly decided.
