On the essay the teacher is asking the student for proof. I’m saying that is the proper thing for a teacher to ask of a student.

The teacher was being pedantic but that’s not what I’m talking about. When you entertain the idea that Hemmings could have ever become Jefferson’s mistress you’re entertaining the idea that rape isn’t rape. As long as he drew breath he acted like she was his property, even going so far as to threaten her kids’ futures to get her to return from Paris and the nominal legal freedom she had there.

The teacher should’ve simply said “cite your sources to make your essay stronger” instead of implying that the claim was unproven without them.
