“Planted” is somewhat misleading, because it would be the ISIS terrorist himself bringing the passport - fake as it might be - not ISIS miraculously planting it afterwards (which doesn’t make much sense).

Not necessarily. It could have been placed there by one of his accomplices after he blew himself up, to make sure it would be discovered and not destroyed in the explosion.
