This got me wondering what happens to people from sane countries that have single payer health insurance if they need medical help here? It must be quite a shock to go into an ER with a broken wrist and walk out owing $20,000.

You can buy medical insurance for a trip. Unless you have a preexisting condition, in which case you are SOL.
