I read about that one. But you may not have heard the rest of the story: The shooter avoided criminal charges, but the courts found that the law only justified his actions for the purposes of criminal law, not civil law. The kid’s family sued the shooter for wrongful death and basically took him to the cleaners in the resulting civil lawsuit. The shooter’s admission of having fired in criminal court left him with no civil defense.
