I’ve thought about a National Logisitics Corps for years. Run it like a military service, but the would just be used for infrastructure and disaster relief, plus get people trained in trade skills for careers when they leave. Need emergency levies or fire breaks? Send a battalion of construction specialists. Isolated communities need better utilities or communication? Send a platoon. In the mean time, get people trained in basic first aid, and other skills and set them up for success in life.

I would wholeheartedly support this. You can go into the actual armed forces if you prefer, of course.
