They’ve been planning Red Dragon missions for a long time. As soon as the Falcon Heavy is available, there’s nothing holding it back. The Dragon V.2 was designed with landing on Mars in mind. I don’t know what’s so funny….

Musk has a long and sordid history of extraordinary claims without extraordinary evidence to back them up. I’ll never understand the internet’s glowing adulation of him.

I’m a little too steeped in the aerospace field to go all that far into details, but the math doesn’t work for large Mars re-entry vehicles. Unless society stops (rightly?) fearing putting a bunch of reactors in space, people will not be landing there in your lifetime or mine.
