2004 serves as an excellent counterargument to that, that whatever misery that may come may ease up just enough that the rubes can convince themselves that “it can’t get any worse.” Then we’re left with 4-8 years of cleaning up the mess, for which we’re penalized when we don’t work miracles overnight.

Plus no time or energy left to tackle big, gnarly problems, like immigration and healthcare and the overgrowth of the military and….
