The failure of our education system to teach people to critically recognize and appreciate the differences between science, the historical method, reason, logic and systems of personal/religious/moral beliefs also contributes to this mess.

Conservatives have spent a long time creating that precise problem with education. They then went after news media. The leaders disdain critical thinking (see the former Texas GOP platform) equating it to rebelling against parents.

This has been a long time in the making. Conservatives have created in essence a “lost generation,” which can’t think for itself; can’t tell what’s true, what’s false, and what’s opinion; and is thus easily lead by whatever they’re told to do.
