High schools are filled with petty tyrants. I think a lot of the lack of faith in government comes from people’s main interaction with government employees when young— not their teachers, but their jerk-ass school administrators.
With apologies to those principals who are not petty tyrants. I know mine were, though.
I have to admit, the little school I ended up in was a good school even though I hated it. It may have been in the middle of a cornfield in Indiana where everyone knew everyone but the staff was pretty open-minded. I know the things I got a slap on the wrist for back then would get me arrested now so things have really changed over the last 20 years. It’s all for the children though, right?
