“Dark Energy” is just a label that is shorthand for “that which is accelerating the expansion of the universe.”

If we had never discovered that distant galaxies are not only receding from us but are also accelerating (thus, an application of a force is evident) away from us, then “dark energy” would not be something about which astrophysicists discuss.

But can we harness it and use it to heat our houses?
