The Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) is a much more fundamentalist and conservative group than the other major Lutheran denominations, the Missouri Synod and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). WELS is overtly creationist, for example, and also refuses to renounce its long-held stance that the Pope is the Antichrist. It is also the smallest of the three groups.
