I’d love to meet the person who wants to stay at poverty-level wages. They’ll be on a rainbow unicorn. I’ve wanted to see one of those for a long time.

It seems to be an article of faith among wingers that everyone on this planet would gladly stop working in order to barely get by in poverty and that’s why we need to end welfare. I think it says a lot more about the work ethic of the person making the claim than it does about programs to help the poor.

My wingnut uncle rants about welfare queens on the dole often enough. I usually ask him why he didn’t go that route if it’s so wonderful: live in a cramped project apartment in East New York surrounded by drug gangs, with his kids attending failing schools. He never has a straight answer for me.
