Sunday Night Classic: Imogen Heap, “Hide and Seek”

An amazing composition, presented for your appreciation

Every time I listen to this song by Imogen Heap I hear more nuances in the vocal arrangement. An incredible piece of music and poetry.

Where are we? What the hell is going on?
The dust has only just begun to fall,
Crop circles in the carpet, sinking, feeling.
Spin me ‘round again and rub my eyes.
This can’t be happening.
When busy streets amass with people
Would stop to hold their heads heavy.

Hide and seek.
Trains and sewing machines.
All those years they were here first.

Oily marks appear on walls
Where pleasure moments hung before.
The takeover, the sweeping insensitivity of this still life.

Hide and seek.
Trains and sewing machines. (Oh, you won’t catch me around here)
Blood and tears,
They were here first.

Mmm, what you say?
Mm, that you only meant well? Well, of course you did.
Mmm, what you say?
Mm, that it’s all for the best? Of course it is.
Mmm, what you say?
Mm, that it’s just what we need? And you decided this.
What you say?
Mmm, what did you say?

Ransom notes keep falling out your mouth.
Mid-sweet talk, newspaper word cut-outs.
Speak no feeling, no I don’t believe you.
You don’t care a bit. You don’t care a bit.

(hide and seek)
Ransom notes keep falling out your mouth.
Mid-sweet talk, newspaper word cut-outs.
(hide and seek)
Speak no feeling, no I don’t believe you.
You don’t care a bit. You don’t care a bit.

(hide and seek)
You don’t care a bit.
You don’t care a bit.
You don’t care a bit.
(hide and seek)
You don’t care a bit.
You don’t care a bit.

Kept skipping ahead in the video waiting for the “auto-tune” intro to stop but it just never did. :(

Is this honestly where even exceptional singers who can stand on their own talent are going to go now? It just seems a bit shortsighted to me for a truly gifted singer to hide her own talent behind computer effects. Aren’t there already enough “auto-tuned” wanna-be singers out there already?

Dude! This goes way beyond using auto-tune to hide pitch problems. Listen to it again - she’s not hiding anything, she’s using the technology to form some very sophisticated chords and harmonic passages.

Oh well, everybody doesn’t like what I like, I guess. (But I think this is one of the most impressive solo vocal pieces ever recorded.)

The vocals remind me a bit of the (beginning of) “O Superman” by Laurie Anderson.

Natural vocals, even by amateur singers can be amazing too…you would swear a delayed reverb effect is being used here…

And in this one a lone female singer does a duet, both the female and the male parts with an amazing show of vocal range…

Whoa. The Walking Dead. Intense.

Spoiler: Eventually everyone is going to die, it is inevitable.

Besides half of everything we have seen so far is probably just going to end up being rebooted and explained away as a dream by one of the lead characters once the writers finish painting themselves into a corner.

I just realized something.

Ian being the Head of the Board of Governors at Coal Hill School means that he likely hired Clara Oswald.

I wonder who would write a letter of recommendation? Perhaps a certain Doctor “Foreman”?

Whoa. The Walking Dead. Intense.

The Governor came back a lot faster than I thought he would.

Also, the image of the dead guy in the lake makes me wonder if that’s going to be The Governor’s new thing. Instead of an aquarium filled with heads, a lake full of chained walkers would be even creepier.

Besides, it has become more and more apparent where “The Walking Dead” writers really stole their story line from…

Am I being disloyal if I find the plots and characterization of the 2 Governor episodes more enjoyable than the prison plague episodes? And the Governor’s team looks like a superior battle force to Rick’s team?

It’s the tank. And the fact that The Governor’s team isn’t dealing with disease right now.

I want a Michonne/Governor throwdown with Daryl thrown into the mix. That would rule.

Hmm. No. Too contrived for effect. I guess auto-tuning has reached its limits now. I think the lyrics are too precious by half. Just not my cup of tea.

Not as bad, though, as the guy here in the apts who has a loud, souped up pickup that he revs up and runs for 15 minutes (no matter the temp) before he leaves every morning. Wakes the whole neighborhood up, I suspect.

I could have slept in since it’s only 20 deg here, so grumpiness needs to wear off.

Because Israel is a political entity and Judaism is a religion.

The Daily Mail took the Guardian’s pompous dickery regarding The Day of the Doctor as a challenge.

Jim Shelley of The Daily Mail called the episode “a clever, chaotic, infuriating combination of nifty, knowing tiny detail and big, hollow, pompous bluster. However, he disliked the effects, accusing the BBC on pandering to the American audience, as well as disliking the Zygons, deeming them not “scary enough,” and naming Matt Smith and David Tennant “irritating.”

Let me borrow from Capaldi for second.

If I watched it, didn’t care for it and voiced my opinion, would that make me a glowing supporter of Nazis? It’s a bit early in the day for this, even if it was evening.

I have to wonder the last time half of the pundit class left the DC area. If they actually could sully themselves enough to visit other parts of the country (without looking down their noses at everyone), they’d have to face the fact that they’re wrong most of the time. Which I guess is why they rarely if ever leave. I could be wrong, they just don’t act like they’ve ever been anywhere outside their little comfort zones.

Oh, pundits do leave the DC area, but for the most part they stay in their own comfort zone. For a conservative pundit to really “get out there”, they might try taking a tour of some famous places in Chicago and talking to the people they meet. A liberal pundit might try visiting Nashville, Tenn and some the Civil War battlefields of that state and talk to the people around there.

In both cases, such a visit would actually expose them to people who support the other side in a relatively normal setting.

The danger (seen from this side of the Atlantic, and maybe from yours as well) with trying too hard to appeal to a US audience is turning something distinctly British in feel to just another American import.
That happen with Mcgann’s Doctor - and IIRC was the main cause of the lukewarm reception, particularly his use of a gun

(Though it’s also possible the Mail is blowing a dog-whistle too - Anti-Americanism is one of the many Anti-s popular among the conservative blue-rinses who read the Mail)

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. I see that the right wing is pitching yet another fit over the Iran deal, and a few tweets seemed to claim that this deal was contrived to get people to not focus on Obamacare.

Well, news flash.

The workings of this deal were set in motion eight months ago when diplomats began meeting in secret in Oman with representatives of Iran. Everyone was in the dark, until the US let Israel know that talks were ongoing, and then talks were expanded to the P5+I format to try and formalize the discussions that had been ongoing between Iran and the US.

This was no sudden breakthrough in the past few weeks. It’s the culmination of a lengthy secret discussion.

That this was all going on in secret could help explain why the French were upset with the talks; it cut them out of being key intermediaries since the US and Iran were directly dealing.

It was at this first high-level gathering at a secure location in the Omani capital of Muscat that the Obama administration began laying the groundwork for this weekend’s historic nuclear pact between world powers and Iran, The Associated Press has learned.

Even America’s closest allies were kept in the dark. Obama first shared the existence of the secret diplomacy with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in September, and only then offered a limited recounting of how long the discussions between Iran and the United States had been taking place.

The Obama administration then informed the five other nations negotiating alongside the U.S. — Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia. And since then much of their public diplomacy with Iran has focused on incorporating and formalizing the progress made in the private U.S.-Iranian talks.

The AP has learned that at least five secret meetings have occurred between top Obama administration and Iranian officials since March.

Deputy Secretary of State William Burns and Jake Sullivan, Vice President Joe Biden’s top foreign policy adviser, led each U.S. delegation. At the most recent face-to-face talks, they were joined by chief U.S. nuclear negotiator Wendy Sherman.

It was at the final get-together that the two sides ultimately agreed on the contours of the pact signed before dawn Sunday by the so-called P5+1 group of nations and Iran, three senior administration officials told the AP. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to be quoted by name talking about the sensitive diplomacy.

The AP was tipped to the first U.S.-Iranian meeting in March, shortly after it occurred, but the White House and State Department disputed elements of the account and the AP could not confirm the meeting. As the Geneva talks appeared to be reaching their conclusion, senior administration officials confirmed to the AP the details of the extensive outreach. They spoke only on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss by name the secret talks.

This is a bit smartassed but close to the truth:

SOCIALISM
You have 2 cows. You give one to your neighbour that had no cows.

COMMUNISM
You have 2 cows. The State takes both and gives you some milk.

FASCISM
You have 2 cows. The State takes both and sells you some milk.

NAZISM
You have 2 cows. The State takes both and shoots you.

BUREAUCRATISM
You have 2 cows. The State takes both, shoots one, milks the other, and then throws the milk away…

TRADITIONAL CAPITALISM
You have two cows. You sell one and buy a bull. Your herd multiplies, and the economy grows. You sell them and retire on the income.

SURREALISM
You have two giraffes. The government requires you to take harmonica lessons.

AN AMERICAN CORPORATION
You have two cows. You sell one, and force the other to produce the milk of four cows. Later, you hire a consultant to analyse why the cow has dropped dead.

ENRON VENTURE CAPITALISM
You have two cows. You sell three of them to your publicly listed company, using letters of credit opened by your brother-in-law at the bank, then execute a debt/equity swap with an associated general offer so that you get all four cows back, with a tax exemption for five cows. The milk rights of the six cows are transferred via an intermediary to a Cayman Island Company secretly owned by the majority shareholder who sells the rights to all seven cows back to your listed company. The annual report says the company owns eight cows, with an option on one more. You sell one cow to buy a new president of the United States, leaving you with nine cows. No balance sheet provided with the release. The public then buys your bull.

THE ANDERSEN MODEL
You have two cows. You shred them.

A FRENCH CORPORATION
You have two cows. You go on strike, organise a riot, and block the roads, because you want three cows.

A JAPANESE CORPORATION
You have two cows. You redesign them so they are one-tenth the size of an ordinary cow and produce twenty times the milk. You then create a clever cow cartoon image called ‘Cowkimon’ and market it worldwide.

A GERMAN CORPORATION
You have two cows. You re-engineer them so they live for 100 years, eat once a month, and milk themselves.

AN ITALIAN CORPORATION
You have two cows, but you don’t know where they are. You decide to have lunch.

A RUSSIAN CORPORATION
You have two cows. You count them and learn you have five cows. You count them again and learn you have 42 cows. You count them again and learn you have 2 cows. You stop counting cows and open another bottle of vodka.

A SWISS CORPORATION
You have 5000 cows. None of them belong to you. You charge the owners for storing them.

A CHINESE CORPORATION
You have two cows. You have 300 people milking them. You claim that you have full employment, and high bovine productivity. You arrest the newsman who reported the real situation.

AN INDIAN CORPORATION
You have two cows. You worship them.

A BRITISH CORPORATION
You have two cows. Both are mad.

AN IRAQI CORPORATION
Everyone thinks you have lots of cows. You tell them that you have none. No-one believes you, so they bomb the **** out of you and invade your country. You still have no cows, but at least now you are part of a Democracy.

A NEW ZEALAND CORPORATION
You have two cows. The one on the left looks very attractive.

AN AUSTRALIAN CORPORATION
You have two cows. Business seems pretty good. You close the office and go for a few beers to celebrate.

Meanwhile, the efforts to eliminate CW from the Syria hit a snag as no third party is willing to accept the weapons for dismantling and destruction. It had been hoped that Albania would accept the weapons, but they’ve refused.

It may be done at sea, but that poses issues considering that the weaponized form has far more dangerous chemicals that must be disposed of than the precursor chemicals that the weapons inspectors have destroyed in place to date.

There’s some 500 tons of CW that need to be disposed - not the precursor materials, but the chemical weapons themselves that have been fashioned by the Assad regime.

Shipping them to facilities elsewhere in the world is a dangerous undertaking - moving them by plane carries significant hazards, but so too does transporting them by ship. This issue will have to be undertaken soon.

Here’s a possible way around this: Israel ratifies the CWC (they’ve signed it, but the Knesset hasn’t ratified), and does so by including taking in the Syrian CW for destruction. It would solve a problem with safe transport, and it would show Israel’s goodwill and acceptance of the CWC.

I was also thinking that “traditional Capitalism” needs to mention how the unregulated cow poop from that many cows pollutes the water supply and kills all the cows in the end.

I agree with you. While autotune gets slammed (and deservedly so) 99% of the time, this is one of the exceptions to the rule. And it is beautifully complex and fragile. Would that the technology7 were used more in an innovative manner like this - this is what it was invented for.

Black Widows Found On Grapes At Supermarkets In Several States

A Pennsylvania woman got quite the shock Thursday when she was washing some red grapes and felt her fingers brush up against something slimy. Yvonne Whalen saw a long spider leg creep over the top of one of the pieces of fruit and immediately dropped the colander into the sink.

A spider expert later confirmed what Whalen’s initial Internet search revealed — it was a young black widow crawling on the grapes.

The appetite-ruining find follows several similar instances of the deadly spiders found on grapes at supermarkets in Michigan, Missouri, Minnesota and Wisconsin, Food Safety News reports.

Yvonne Duckhorn was inspecting a container of red grapes at an Aldi supermarket in Wauwatosa, Wis., earlier this month, when she spotted something peculiar.

“I saw the legs moving frantically,” Duckhorn recalled to the Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel. “I’ve seen bugs on fruit before, and I thought, ‘That is a very big spider.’ Nothing I’d ever seen before.”

Srsly they actually are saying this:

First, it encourages people to work less. Since the plan only offers tax credits below a certain income level, Americans will face a strong disincentive to stop working once they reach the income level where their subsidies are cut off.

In fact, benefits experts are already advising their self-employed clients to work fewer hours in order to take advantage of the law’s subsidies. That’s especially true in high wage areas, since Obamacare’s subsidies are not adjusted for differences in the cost of living among states.

In effect, Obamacare levies a massive increase in marginal tax rates on middle- and upper-income workers. That tax hike will act as a drag on the economy.

I just can’t even.

There are some artists who use the tech to push new boundaries of music; others use it as a crutch for a lack of talent.

Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters recently did a documentary of Sound City (highly recommended if you’re a music history buff), and purchased the soundboard of the studio after it closed, because he wanted it. He also got together a bunch of different artists to jam and record songs using the classic board.

That included Trent Reznor of NIN, who’s known for his tech (both on tour and in the studio), and Reznor commented that the ability to do music organically allows for experimentation and serendipity to get to a classic sound. Thought that was right on the mark.

They also lament that technology has let people with no talent achieve fame and fortune - specifically pointing out the auto-tune miasma.

re: #95 William Barnett-Lewis

Yeah, I had seen that.

There’s so many ways to combine food traditions in a tasty manner.

I experimented making sweet potato latkes last week. Had issues with keeping them from falling apart, but they were damned tasty. Heck, they were awesome without any condiments, but went in a different direction with a bit of sriracha on top (okay, a bit more than a bit, but still). Sweet, savory, hot, and spicy. Crisp, chewy, and would make a great side to a roast turkey.

Desserts work the same way - jelly donuts would be a great end to the meal, or say a cinnamon/nutmeg honey cake. The Mrs. does sugar cookies, and is doing chocolate gelt too - flavor them with raspberry or orange for a twist.

There are lots of flavors to play with, and playing outside the box is a great way to come up with new food traditions (or just meal ideas for the rest of the year).

You wouldn’t if you’re already well over the cap, but if you’re close to the cap it could become a consideration. The basic concern about a dramatic fall-off in a subsidy is that if a $1000 rise in income is going to result in insurance costing $5000 more, then people are not going to try to higher incomes if they think they’re liable to get caught in that gap. It must be said, though, that it would likely be possible to escape such a trap by giving the excess money to charity.

The later argument in the article that Obamacare has a “marriage penalty” merits review. If the subsidy regime does indeed contain that kind of problem, then it should be amended to correct said problem.

It seems to be an article of faith among wingers that everyone on this planet would gladly stop working in order to barely get by in poverty and that’s why we need to end welfare. I think it says a lot more about the work ethic of the person making the claim than it does about programs to help the poor.

The fail is especially strong with this one.

For one, the Angolan government seems to have no problem shooting and imprisoning unarmed protesters.

Second, the government of Angola is, and has been since independence, run by the MPLA, a Marxist party. Bryan might be dimly aware that Cuba sent troops to support the MPLA during the 1980s civil war, while Reagan supported the opposition UNITA.

128 Dark_Falcon  Mon, Nov 25, 2013 7:51:46am

Now, here’s a ‘knockout game’ story that’s real:

Marvell Weaver, Teen Playing ‘Knockout’ With Stun Gun, Shot Twice By Victim

A Michigan teenager who assaulted a man with a stun gun was shot twice when the victim defended himself with a legally concealed pistol.

In May, Marvell Weaver, 17, was playing a variation of “knockout,” a brutal and senseless game in which an assailant sucker punches an unsuspecting person with the intention of knocking him unconscious with one blow. The difference was that Weaver decided to attack his victim with a stun gun.

But Weaver, who said he’d played the game about six or seven other times, didn’t anticipate what would happen next. The intended victim, a 28-year-old father who was waiting for his 6-year-old daughter to get dropped off from school at a bus stop, had a gun on him.

SNIP

According to Michigan Live, Weaver told the man who had just shot him, “I’m sorry, please don’t kill me. I don’t know why I did that. I’m high, you know. I just wanna go home.”

Weaver survived the shooting and was sentenced to a year in jail for the attack. He now regrets playing “knockout” and admits he got off easy for it.

Weaver is lucky he only got shot in the butt. I really do hope he’s learned his lesson.

Some background: Angola is 95% Christian, mostly Catholic and evangelical. Islam…there’s maybe a few hundred thousand Muslims in a nation of 14-16 millions. The former are mostly immigrants from West Africa. You don’t get very far in looking for stuff on the Islam ban before you hit the bad crazy of Gellar-like proportions, intermingled with Christian nationalist sentiments.

The reasoning being given for the ban is a fear of Wahhabism, but there’s a lot of textured stuff going on. Muslims are associated with illegal immigration, there’s unverified reports of “Muslims mobs” attacking Christians, There’s also the question of whether this ban fits into a larger picture of Angola as a nation in an ongoing internal conflict…I don’t know the situation well enough to speculate intelligently, but the nation has just had a shakeup to its political process, so power is even more concentrated with one party.

No-one’s going to ban Christianity…and that’s exactly why Fischer is excited.

Seriously. What’s so bad about Thanksgiving and Hanukkah happening at the same time? That’s just an opportunity for cultural blending and more food options.

Seems like a win-win to me.

Contrarian being contrary. But it’s more than that. This person seems to have real issues with her faith, explaining it to her family/kids, and doesn’t get that it’s a holiday that’s meant to be fun and about eating.

Heck, with her crabbiness, I’m not surprised that she’s ranting about how everything this time of year is infused with “pumpkin flavorings” even though it’s really just dumping a bunch of cinnamon, nutmeg, and related spices/herbs into anything that is consumable, whether it needs it or not.

Pretty much. Between the “Obummercare will encourage people to cut their own paychecks!” fail and the “Married people will divorce so they qualify for benefits!” idiocy, there’s no difference between the ACA derp and the welfare derp.

re: #135 The Ghost of a Flea

Not that would, but they could. And an overweening government wouldn’t have to ban Christianity to make life miserable for believing Christians who disagree with it, or who land it decided to take to give to some Chinese mining company.

Twitter does not allow for such distinctions, though. My post was right near its limit as it was.

Angola does pretty well on evaluations of freedoms w/r/t religion…though, as others have noted, there’s a new party in power so that may change.

I doubt Fischer’s aware of the ideological orientation of the MPLA…in his head, all that matters is religious discrimination against Islam. Doubtless he’ll see an opportunity to make a properly Christian nation of Angola, with even more religious discrimination built into governance.

Fischer is an unapologetic follower of tribal morality; banning Christianity would be a terrible injustice…but it would be an injustice that would make a perfect excuse to social-engineer a society where Christians were the ones doing the punching downward. He’s the embodiment of my repeated refrain about the basis of the current brand of American “evangelical” social conservatism being about the future opportunity to mete out retaliation…both on a personal and metaphysical level.

I mean, that’s everything Fischer stands for…Real True Christians with the power, striking at everyone that’s not Of The Tribe. It’s literally fascism (in the Eco sense)…a tiered society where inequality is built into the basic morality—where some can do no wrong.

One Democrat brought up concerns about the results. I think the GOP itself tried making that rule change and the board turned them down. I believe there are two Republicans and one Democrat on that board. Not all provisional ballots were accepted but in the end Herring won by a slim margin. Would have been slim even with the unaccepted ballots.

Campuses have phones all over campus that call directly to campus security. Security knows exactly where the call is coming from, and there is no need to remember or dial a number. At my daughter’s campus, there are video cameras at each phone so security can see what’s going on.

re: #187 First As Tragedy, Then As Farce

I know! Odd that this is called in from a phone booth.

I’m checking Google maps street view in the vicinity of the claimed call, and have yet to find a phone booth. There’s bus enclosures there, but not a phone booth.

Note too that the claimed call is from across town - it’s not near the campus at all.

I’m hoping this is some kind of prank, and not the real deal.

According to an alert message sent out by the university at 10:17 a.m., New Haven Police received an anonymous call from a phone booth in the 300 block of Columbus Avenue (between Howard Avenue and Hallock Street) reporting a person on the Yale Campus with a gun.

My Google calendar is set up to show Islamic & Jewish holidays in addition to the regular secular & Christian ones. At the beginning of November when I saw Chanukkah starting on the same day as Thanksgiving, my first reaction was surprise at how unusual it as that Chanukkah was so early (I even went elsewhere to check and make sure it wasn’t a mistake). My second reaction was, “Cool!”

It reminds me of when Thanksgiving falls during Ramadan—I believe the last time was in 2002—it was great fun, a feeling of being extra thankful. For us they coincide around every 30 years (the next one isn’t till 2033), so even if I didn’t like it, it’s not something that happens frequently enough to whine about, FFS

It seems to be an article of faith among wingers that everyone on this planet would gladly stop working in order to barely get by in poverty and that’s why we need to end welfare. I think it says a lot more about the work ethic of the person making the claim than it does about programs to help the poor.

My wingnut uncle rants about welfare queens on the dole often enough. I usually ask him why he didn’t go that route if it’s so wonderful: live in a cramped project apartment in East New York surrounded by drug gangs, with his kids attending failing schools. He never has a straight answer for me.

It’s a variation on their equally idiotic talking point that someone would stop working if they were about to hit the new, slightly higher income tax bracket. Anyone that would stop earning money because of a new 3% (or whatever) increase in their marginal rate is dumber than a box of hammers.

Well, many of them don’t understand the whole “marginal rate” thing, and they think the extra 3% will be levied on all their earnings. But I suppose “dumber than a box of hammers” could be construed to cover that misunderstanding.

The Hebrew calendar is based on a lunar month, but unlike the Islamic calendar which can travel around the secular (solar) calendar, the Hebrew year is anchored by the month of Nisan, because Passover always must occur during the spring.

This means that every few years, a “leap month” is inserted before Nisan, which pushes Passover into the spring and all the other holidays which follow, also get pushed back.

5774/2014 is a “leap year” for both the solar and Hebrew calendars.

It gets worse, because ole’ You Know Who is involved:

The faith-based nonprofit claims Radio Shack has continued to censor “Christmas” for years despite tens of thousands of consumer requests asking the company to recognize the holiday. The company frequently uses the term “holiday” instead of “Christmas” in its advertising.

“Radio Shack has been one of the most stubborn retailers that we have dealt with,” Bryan Fischer, director of issue analysis for AFA, told The Christian Post. “If you look at Radio Shack’s recent economic performance, the reality is that they are not in a position to offend any of their potential customer base. So we believe when we make it clear to them that the people who are looking to buy Christmas gifts for family and friends expect Radio Shack to be Christmas-friendly this year, we believe that we’ll get their attention.”

AFA wants boycott participants to leave comments on Radio Shack’s Facebook page and call the company’s corporate office to declare that they will shop elsewhere during the Christmas season unless the company makes some changes. The group is also encouraging participants to “politely” inform local store managers of their intentions.

Fischer says Radio Shack franchise owners will not be pleased with corporate leaders because of the boycott.

If Bryan Fischer is your “director of issue analysis”, then your organization is seriously fucked up.

Sigh. I think it’s just crazy to kill yourself running around, spending money you often don’t really have, cooking for hours(days even) for a meal that ends in 20 minutes, and on and on. Though to be honest, I like the cooking, even if it’s just for me, The Husband and The Teenager. I don’t think having a lot of money would even change that for me, not when I see how nasty people are in the stores this time of year, over and over.

It’s very telling the retailers consider their holiday season the make or break for the whole year. Why should it be like that? I don’t think it was like this always, was it?

That said, I can understand that there is a “Seasonal Affective Disorder” that can afflict some people, because of unrealistic expectations, dysfunctional family gatherings, and also the burden of holiday preparations can be oppressive.

re: #215 A Mom Anon

That would be me. My family takes ALL the fun out of dysfunctional, I mean they aren’t even quirky, they’re mostly just assholes. I do my very best to not drag other people’s holidays down, but it’s really hard for me to see all the happyhappylookathowHAPPYwearedamnit pictures all over the place and the showing off of gifts and all that stuff. I would love to just skip over everything from Nov 1 til about mid January.

I think a big part of it might be the commercialization of the holidays, especially Christmas. When I became Muslim and stopped celebrating it, it was such a HUGE relief not to be facing the financial burden of having to buy a bunch of gifts. I do miss the tree & ornaments & stuff though… Nowadays, since Muslims also revere Jesus (a.s.) as a prophet, I use the Christmas season to reflect on his life and how it changed the world.

Anyway, my family is spread far & wide so, thankfully, I don’t have to deal with dysfunctional family gatherings. ;)

Ohhhhhh, I had no idea about Nisan! Thanks for the info.

Well, I’m 60 years old and people have been grousing about the commercialization of Christmas as long as I can remember. For retailers, it’s a chance for an end-of-the-year bump to their bottom line.

For the rest of us, it’s a chance to see Christmas tree displays just before Halloween, which is just ridiculous AFAIC.

‘Killer robots’ ban must be part of Geneva talks, says campaign group
Campaign to Stop Killer Robots says UN-sponsored meeting must stop development of fully autonomous weapons

An international coalition of disarmament and human rights groups has said that UN-sponsored talks in Geneva this week must seize the opportunity to ban the development of fully autonomous weapons, dubbed “killer robots”.

The Campaign to Stop Killer Robots said that such weapons, once activated, would select and engage targets without human intervention.

Though they have yet to be fully developed, robotic systems with various degrees of autonomy and lethality are used by the US, Israel, South Korea, and the UK, while other nations, including China and Russia, are believed to be moving toward systems that would give full combat autonomy to machines, the campaign warned.

“In recent months, fully autonomous weapons have gone from an obscure, little-known issue, to one that is commanding international attention”, it said.

The Geneva meeting is expected to lead to an agreement to place the issue of “killer robots” firmly on the agenda of the UN Convention on Conventional Weapons. “Most fundamentally, an international ban is needed to ensure that humans will retain control over decisions to target and use force against other humans,” said Mary Wareham of Human Rights Watch (HRW).

ICYMI: Judicial conservative group that once severely conservatively supported filibuster reform now decides it’s against it.

Seeking a ‘consensus’ candidate is not the right thing to do. It is not what the Constitution contemplates, in our system built on the consent of the governed. Majorities didn’t elect George W. Bush and 55 Republican Senators to do that. For the President to choose a Justice on this basis would retroactively disenfranchise the voters in these elections. The people elected the President so that he would exercise his own judgment according to the criteria he stated in two elections. By definition, those will never be ‘consensus’ nominees. Justices Ginsburg and Breyer were not ‘consensus’ nominees, nor should any Republican nominees be — particularly when Republicans control the Senate, for heaven’s sake.

I mean, ‘for heaven’s sake’. //

Speaking of Stockman:

Stockman’s filings don’t explain his income

Both as a candidate and as a congressman, Rep. Steve Stockman of Clear Lake has failed to make federally required disclosures about business affiliations that stretch from Texas to the British Virgin Islands, and has provided no details about the business he claims as his sole source of income.

Stockman returned to office in 2013 after 16 years away from Congress - crediting a low-budget, come-from-behind campaign to which he claimed to have lent more than $100,000 of his own money.

Stockman failed to file a federal disclosure form during his candidacy in 2012 when he ran for the newly created District 36, which stretches east and north from Southeast Harris County, around Beaumont, and beyond to the Louisiana line.

Every other Texan in Congress, whether incumbent or freshman, filed a report in 2012.

‘Killer robots’ ban must be part of Geneva talks, says campaign group
Campaign to Stop Killer Robots says UN-sponsored meeting must stop development of fully autonomous weapons

“Killer robots” sounds funny but the concept is actually really spooky if you think about it…it’s a continuation of the ethical discussion of practices like spamming land mines and other area denial weapons with no regard for civilian casualties.

But consider role of the land mine in past and current conflicts…and, in particular, how their indiscriminate use has created humanitarian issues that linger long after the conflict. Then make the landmine “smarter”—motion detection instead of pressure plate activation—and then “smarter” still—a mobile unit instead of a buried trap.

Addendum: I think there’s actually Philip Dick story that deals with this idea.

Drive-by - If this guy isn’t exaggerating, then it looks like this agreement pissed off pretty much everyone on all sides:

Historic US-Iran Deal Is First Step Toward Peace

The substance of the accord reached in Geneva is a breakthrough, but the politics of the agreement is equally important. President Obama and Secretary of State Kerry signed the deal in explicit, full-frontal defiance of American hawks, neoconservatives and hardliners, the Israel lobby and anti-Iran partisans in Congress. Foreign Minister Javad Zarif and his team, backed by President Hassan Rouhani — elected in June with a mandate to do exactly this — have similarly defied their own country’s hardliners and skeptics, led by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and by what Zarif calls Iran’s own tea party. And the United States struck the deal despite outright hostility, bordering on hysteria, from its two chief allies in the Middle East, Israel and Saudi Arabia. […]

From the same article as above:

Interestingly, a statement from the White House early today explicitly rules out the imposition of additional sanctions, which is a direct message to leaders of the US Senate, including majority leader Harry Reid and Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who’d hinted that they’d move ahead with yet another round of sanctions in December. The accord, says the White House, commits the parties of the P5+1, including the United States, to “not impose new nuclear-related sanctions for six months, if Iran abides by its commitments under this deal, to the extent permissible within their political systems.” […]

And they’re right. It is the lower middle class—that strata of independent farmers, small shopkeepers, craft and highly skilled workers, and small-scale entrepreneurs—that has been hit hardest by globalization. “Western industry has displaced traditional crafts—female as well as male—and large-scale multinational-controlled agriculture has downgraded the independent farmer to the status of hired hand,” writes journalist Barbara Ehrenreich. This has resulted in massive male displacement—migration, downward mobility. It has been felt the most not by the adult men who were the tradesmen, shopkeepers, and skilled workers, but by their sons, by the young men whose inheritance has been seemingly stolen from them. They feel entitled and deprived—and furious. These angry young men are the foot soldiers of the armies of rage that have sprung up around the world.

Drive-by - If this guy isn’t exaggerating, then it looks like this agreement pissed off pretty much everyone on all sides:

From the same article as above:

The thing is that Congress could simply ignore said agreement. No executive agreement can override an act of congress, so if 2/3rds of the House and Senate decided to punish Iran the rest of the world could not prevent them from passing sanctions to do so.

Okay, disclosure: I just looked up the Wiki entry for the article’s author, who is a foreign policy and defense writer for The Nation. Seems he was involved with the Lyndon LaRouche movement. Isn’t LaRouche like a total moonbat or something? It doesn’t make the reporting incorrect, I’m just saying that we have to pay more attention to sources these days as everything seems designed to push certain psychological buttons and I’m leery of being manipulated.

I think the same mindset that says “she’s lying” in rape cases exists with domestic violence too. Having had to run for my life years and years ago, I can attest to the fact that there are not enough safe spaces out there for women and their children-it’s better now, but we have miles to go. And there are certainly not enough people who believe women when they speak up. Leaving IS the most dangerous time, I think women instinctively know this and stay for that, and many other reasons. Not enough support being the main reason.

Here in GA, there’s another organization that deals with another aspect of this issue- Pets. Many times the abuser will also hurt the family pet to coerce the victims into staying because most DV shelters will not deal with animals. Ahimsa House finds either temporary or permanent homes for the animals in violent families, they’ve even taken in bearded dragons and iguanas.

Pets (in Illinois at least) can be included in Orders of Protection (as listed property). Our Shelter also has a couple of places that will take pets while the survivor is in shelter.

It’s a big deal, many, many women will not leave because they do not want to leave their pet and we can’t accept them in shelter.

One advocate even took a lady’s cat once.

I am constantly amazed at the level of dedication the social workers have—for so little pay —compared to their education levels committment.

FINALLY! I was floored with the coach’s contract was renewed.

This is par for the course given that the main offenders were juveniles, but it still grates on me:

A grand jury then began investigating whether others should be charged. In October, it indicted William Rhinaman, 53, the director of technology for Steubenville City Schools, on charges of tampering with evidence, obstruction of justice, obstructing official business and perjury.

His daughter, Hannah Rhinaman, 20, of Mingo Junction, Ohio, was also indicted that month on two counts of receiving stolen property and one count of grand theft, according to a news release from DeWine’s office.

The charges against Hannah Rhinaman are separate and unrelated to the indictment against her father, the October news release said.

If convicted, Walter Rhinaman could be sentenced to four years in prison, which is longer than the two teens convicted of rape will serve.

Monday’s announcement confirms recent published reports that Couric would diversify into online video programming after spending decades in broadcast television as a talk-show host and news anchor.

Couric, 56, will continue to host her daytime talk show, “Katie,” on ABC even after she becomes Yahoo’s “global anchor” beginning next year.

Contractor charged with murder in Philly collapse

hosted.ap.org

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The contractor who oversaw a botched building demolition that killed six people in a Salvation Army thrift store in Philadelphia is being charged with murder, manslaughter and reckless endangerment.

“Officials said Monday that Griffin Campbell is also charged with risking a catastrophe and criminal conspiracy in addition to the six counts of third-degree murder, six counts of involuntary manslaughter and 13 counts of endangerment. In the collapse, an unsupported wall crashed down onto the neighboring thrift store, trapping and killing shoppers inside.”

Twenty-three states (Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin) have laws prohibiting insurance coverage of abortion in state exchanges. Eight of those states - Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and Utah - go even further and reach all plans in the state, banning insurance coverage of abortion in plans outside the exchange as well.

GWB and past Presidents pull the same stunt. Just enough “official” business so the party does not have to re-imburse travel on AF1 etc. The state and cities still bear a significant cost.

I doubt the Senate will end up passing the bill, but perhaps Harry Reid is saying that to put Iran on notice. The idea being to let Iran know that if they start off with acts of bad faith, then ‘Good Cop Obama’ will give way to ‘Bad Cop US Senate’ and they won’t like what happens then. More likely Reid is just covering his ass.

I thought I heard Lindsay Graham say they’ll pass the tougher sanctions but will postpone for 6 months.

re: #345 Charles Johnson

More times than I can count have I seen negotiations processes - especially the diplomatic kind - implode because the negotiations were public, and they were doomed from the outset.

Middle East peace deals especially are sensitive to scuttling due to politicization due to publicity. It allows extremists and rabble rousers to undermine any potential deal.

Backchannels negotiations and talks allow the parties to work unfettered by the media weight on their backs and you can get a more frank discussion.

Oslo didn’t occur under the glare of the media spotlight. It was announced after the terms had been agreed upon by Palestinian and Israeli negotiators. Madrid was an attempt at a public negotiation and it failed.

Had word of this negotiation and opening of relations leaked at the outset, it is likely that the GOP and hardliners generally would have scuttled the talks even before any progress could be reached - talks on talks.

Backchannel talks and secret diplomacy is a critical part of the foreign relations tool chest. Revealing those talks before a deal is struck can and will have disastrous consequences for the talks.

Don’t forget that Stewie has a time machine. Retconning that would be easy.

That was in the plot - Stewie had dismantled the time machine and couldn’t get parts for it, so he couldn’t go back and save Brian.

I’ve had the misfortune of driving around LA too many times.

Really, once is too many times. But it’s more than once. ;)

Ad absurdum dude.

I looked at his schedule, saw that it is all about fundraising, and came to the rather unremarkable conclusion that this is a fundraising trip.

And you should have taken notice my bitch was mostly about the timing. That and being an involuntary donor to the DNC cause.

Dude, that’s exactly what I”m pointing about. Is this just another “Obama shouldn’t take vacations, it’s on my dime that he does it!” kind of deal? Obama traveled to LA. In LA, he’s doing fundraising. He’s obviously also doing all kinds of other presidential shit, no matter what shows up on his schedule.

So how are you a ‘donor’, exactly?

No this is not one of those nut job deals. It’s merely what I said. I said this is the 16th trip, the timing sucks and I’m in on the costs. Can’t a guy have a mild criticism without getting lumped in?

Indirectly a donor of course. The state and city has significant non reimbursed costs. Some may say “hey did I ever bitch about GWB?” Probably not much, but I don’t recall him in town in a holiday week, and I said nothing about Obama the first 15 trips.

It’s pretty odd to get called out for saying his trip is what he himself and his staff say it is. I totally don’t get that.

Back in 2008 this was a floorfiller remixed by DJ Tiesto.
