I bow to your superior judgement here. However, am I wrong in thinking that it has escalated rapidly in the last 14 months?

Most definitely - post election especially. Several things happened to encourage it: Two forces majeur that used to keep a lid on these crazies (for obviously different reasons) died: William F. Buckley, and Paul Weyrich.
Weyrich funded and encouraged many of these orgs, but he had the sense to keep them and their bile lower key so his goal was pragmatic. William F. Buckley stood on principle however, and didn’t want cockroaches and worms in his party.

Then there was that thing where we let the Democrats go from the luddite party to the party who believes there is a future while our pundits are preaching doom.

I could go on but this is getting damned depressing.
