Problem is, with all things wingnut, the tendency is toward inertia - the more he moved to the derp side, the greater the tendency to continue toward the derp side. You’re right. Honestly, I always saw his upbringing as an excuse since you and many other Lizards have grown up in conservative households. I don’t know DF personally honestly but if what he would always say about his Dad was even close to be true, I do feel bad to a degree since no one should have to face ostracization from family for disagreeing politically.
