Like any other gay subgroup, it’s changed markedly over time, especially as mainstream acceptance of gays increased and there became less of a value in concealment. Some bears these days are what I’d call ‘hypermasculine’, in a way that can, depending on who is doing it, either be kind of funny or downright scary.
