I wonder if Connie Francis, who is still alive, gets shunned from awards because she was (probably still is) somewhat staid Republican (Nixon and Reagan supporter, etc.)

While she never really was the transformative artist that the most important singers of the 50’s and 60’s were, she still had many hits and was/is enormously popular.
