Apparently there really was an ongoing thing of U-Boats coming into the Irish north west coast to get fresh food and take on water. It was the absolute back of beyond, the Irish were staying out of the war, and apparently it became known as a place where you could stock up on better edibles before going back under and out.

Doesn’t surprise me. There were a lot of Axis sympathizers in Ireland. I’ve heard a story that DeValera was offered Northern Ireland by Churchill if they dropped the neutrality but he declined.
