I don’t find it surprising, merely amusing. And I’m not belittling people, I’m just belittling their beliefs.

Belittling a person’s core belief is the same as belittling them personally. “Cult” is, as danarchy noted, a very loaded word that conjures up all sorts of connotations such and Jim Jones and the People’s Temple and the insane violence of Joseph Koney and the Lord’s Resistance Army.

Using a loaded word like that is asking to be regarded with hostility. But if hostility is what you want, I’ll be happy to keep downdinging you.
