Actually, that’s exactly what it was. GW Bush’s ‘service’ in the TANG was a way for him to avoid Vietnam with a plausible alternative, and the idea that he was phoning it in/goldbricking was always very plausible.

I think that the real documents existed somewhere and had been seen by some people. Passing off bogus copies was a total Karl Rove Evil Genius move to totally spin the discussion away from the fact that Dubya not only ducked Vietnam by serving in the Air National Guard, but could not even be bothered to show up to that…
