On today’s episode of ‘I live in fucking Stupidville’…Oakdale grocery offering 20 percent discount to Trump supporters

An Oakdale grocery store is offering supporters of President Donald Trump a 20% discount on purchases, excluding beer, the store’s Facebook page posted this week.

“TRUMP Supporters GET 20% OFF,” read the ad, decorated with an American flag, from the Fresh Food Supermarket on Montauk Highway. “MENTION AT THE CASH REGISTER YOU ARE A TRUMP SUPPORTER TO GET DISCOUNT. (EXCLUDES BEER).”

A woman who answered the store phone Thursday morning, Alejandra Garcia, told a caller: “You just go up to the counter. You tell the cashier that you’re a supporter of Trump, and we’ll give you the discount.”

The sale began Thursday and runs indefinitely, but savings is capped at $20 per purchase, Garcia said.

In an interview, store owner José Colón said that he knew before he made the Facebook post that the sale would be controversial. He said he voted for Barack Obama in the 2008 and 2012 elections, but that he voted for Trump in 2016 and is voting for Trump again this year.

“I’m a Trump supporter. We live in a free country. We have freedom of speech to support any candidate,” he said, explaining that he believes Trump “will help this country recoup from the pandemic economically.”

Asked whether he would also give a discount to someone who announces support for Trump’s Democratic opponent, Joe Biden, Colón said: “I’ll give them a discount as well,” but he demurred when asked about third-party candidates.

It’s after noon, so I’m going to hit the rack.

I get the impression that Gov. Kristi Noem of South Dakota is trying to present herself as the female Ben Sasse, positioning herself as Teh Freedumb candidate to set up for a run in 2024 for the Senate or the Presidency.

I suppose that depends on how many bodies she has to step over in the wake of South Dakota’s epidemic she has exacerbated (along with exacerbating our cases here, since all the wingnuts who went to Sturgis and the Independence Day Covidpalooza passed through the Nebraska Panhandle).

trump posted the “60 Minutes” interview with Pence.

Leslie Stahl told Pence that she felt he and President Trump had “insulted 60 Minutes” by giving “set campaign speeches” instead of answering her questions.

Said Stahl: “Mr. Vice President, this was not a rally. This was not just a campaign speech to the public. This was supposed to be an interview. And the same with the president. And I feel that you both have insulted 60 Minutes by not answering our questions and by giving set campaign speeches that we’ve heard both of you give at rallies without answering our questions.”

On today’s episode of ‘I live in fucking Stupidville’…Oakdale grocery offering 20 percent discount to Trump supporters

That reminds me of Lea De Laria’s standup routine in the 90s I saw on Channel 4. She was saying that she was in a shop where there was 10% off if you were a lesbian, and she saw someone else coming to the till, and, asked if she was a lesbian, she said no.

And Lea’s like: “WHY?!?! IT’S 10% OFF!! JUST SAY YOU’RE A LESBIAN!!! IF IT WAS A CHRISTIAN SHOP AND IT WAS 20% OFF, I’D BE GOING ‘HAAALLELUIJAAH!!’

So, I’m just thinking, if there’s enough Dems in the town who are not well known to the shop owners, and enough MAGA hats to go around, just go in their and take advantage of the 20% off. Given it’s Long Island, this shop might find they’re onto a loser.

If the typical grocery store runs on a low single-digit profit margin (and that may even be generous these days), the guy won’t survive long if he’s giving the store away to everyone at 20% off.

To be honest, I’m noticing from the story there are some caveats to this offer, (No discount on alcohol, 20% discount capped at $20.) so I’m suspecting the announcement is more publicity than anything else.

Still, if there are enough “pro-Trump” purchases on non-alcoholic things like, say, Cheetos, we might see the store owner quietly reverse their policy. But, then, what will they have gained? The Trumpists won’t like it, and I suspect the local neighbourhood might react negitively to this publicity stunt.

What would be funny is if this keeps networks from making election night predictions.

It would be great if the networks could do that. I can see that CNN and NBC might try to go with that, but FOX is going to be screaming that it’s a Trump landslide at 8:01 eastern. It’s going to be a miracle if people stay calm during the 3+ days of vote counting.

You know what’s completely missing from even the most earnest of the Cletus Safari stories?

We hear about Trump 2016 voters who are sticking with their man. Some were Obama 2012 converts, some are GOP diehards.

We hear about Trump 2016 voters who are switching to Biden or not voting or voting third-party. Again, some flip-flopped from Obama to Trump and are coming back. Some were GOP diehards who have finally had enough.

We hear - every now and again - about Obama 2012/Clinton 2016 voters who are voting for Biden, with varying levels of enthusiasm.

But there’s a fourth corner of that graph that’s completely missing from any coverage, and I think it’s because it basically doesn’t exist: Obama 2012/Clinton 2016 voters who are switching TO Trump 2020.

When you’re looking at an election in 2016 that was won by just 70,000 votes in three swing states, you don’t win again four years later if you’re not swinging any new votes your way. You just plain don’t.

I used to have enormous respect for Rather, and I still would if he had simply admitted the mistake and retracted the story. That would have shut the whole thing down quickly. But his ego and pride made him play it exactly the wrong way. The only reason he refuses to admit it to this day is because he knows with his large following and reputation there are plenty of people who will always believe him when he says the documents were genuine. I don’t think so. The thing about this is that the forgery was TOTALLY OBVIOUS, and I remain surprised that nobody at CBS News noticed it before I did. Seriously. Anyone who has ever worked with both a typewriter and a computer word processor should have been able to see the forgery, especially if it’s their job and their business.

It doesn’t make sense for a ratfucker to plant something this obvious and risk it being instantly discovered. Occam’s Razor tells me the much more likely explanation is just incompetent forgeries, that got on the air because of a disastrous failure in the editing workflow at CBS.

IIRC some of the language in the documents just wasn’t the kind of stuff that would plausibly end up in official military records of a Bush, which is why I don’t think the text of the forgeries was copied verbatim from real documents.

If this was a GOP ratfucking operation, then having the forgeries be completely obvious would have been part of the plan.

If CBS news does their job properly, they catch the forgery and no harm is done to the GOP cause.

If CBS News fucks up, the GW Bush TANG story is completely killed off, and Dan Rather and CBS take a big credibility hit, which is exactly what happened.

Those aren’t bad odds for something that could have been done by Rove in 1/2 hour. Especially if the Bushies had reason to suspect that Rather/CBS news were behind the times technically.

Just saw this and had to pass it on: Uncle Wiggly turns 100.

PROVO, Utah — Retired Air Force Col. Gail S. Halvorsen changed the course of history with just two pieces of gum. Now has made a bit of his own history. Halvorsen turned 100 years old this month.

For all that has been written and documented, and all the awards that have been given, the infamous “Candy Bomber” or “Uncle Wiggly Wings” — as the children of Berlin called him — Halvorsen’s story never gets old.

Born Oct. 10, 1920, in Salt Lake City, Halvorsen spent most of his childhood in rural Idaho and in Garland, Utah.

As a boy, he loved airplanes and dreamed of flying them one day.

Halvorsen graduated from Bear River High School in 1939. He went on to spend a brief time at Utah State University in Logan. He also joined the Air Force ROTC and got his private pilot’s license in 1941.

To understand why Halvorsen is beloved by the people in Germany and Berlin, you must understand what happened.

But the point was to get caught. A great forgery would have been mistaken for the real thing. CBS failed in their due diligence, but the point of the topic was to change the subject from Bush’s service to people denigrating Bush’s service.

If Dan Rather had just immediately admitted the error and retracted the report, it wouldn’t have gone anywhere. The conspiracy would also have required expecting Rather to stonewall and refuse to admit an error. But again, incompetence explains it easily without the need for shadowy conspiracies that have somehow evaded exposure for 16 years.

As I recall, TX doesn’t require declaration of party ID when registering to vote. Is there some other way to get a handle on the current breakdown of early voters? I think some trumperhoid somewhere on Twitter claimed they were overwhelmingly GOPer, but that seems unlikely if most of the numbers are coming from urban areas…

Texas Tribune has some hints:

Turnout in the 10 counties with the most registered voters

In the 10 counties with the most registered voters, 3,480,385 people, or 35.8% of registered voters, have voted early. According to the latest figures reported by the secretary of state before the 2020 general election, 57.3% of registered voters live in these 10 counties.

Politically, the 10 largest counties don’t represent Texas’ other 244 smaller counties. In 2016, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton won the large counties by about 620,000 votes. President Donald Trump netted 1.4 million votes in the other counties and won the state. The large counties moved further to the left in the latest statewide race, when U.S. Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke won the large counties by 930,000 votes. But that couldn’t offset Sen. Ted Cruz’ 1.1 million vote advantage in the other counties.apps.texastribune.org

He gets something from SS each month but $800 doesn’t go very far. Manager showed up with him and we have him set up for a couple of warm nights. We’re looking for longer term but housing up here is slim to none and what there is is over priced. Two words that will bring a shudder of recognition to ER veterans… “transverse colon”. The tale I heard, it was a small aerosol can with rounded plastic cap — it had been pushed up into the transverse part of the large colon after the unfortunate sufferer had tried to fish it out of his descending colon with a bent coathanger.

He’s traumatized the whole country, except for the rich people he wants to love him. That includes the red hat crowd whether they’ll admit it or not. Normal, healthy humans are not angry, hateful and full of venom like a lot of these people are. Trump unleashed every ugly aspect of humanity within our country and culture. One big band aid ripped off is America’s overall attitude of “I want it all and I want it NOW”, no delayed gratification for US, NO SIR! Waiting and working toward a goal is just not By-God-American. This is why people vote and then become uninvolved til the next cycle. And then bitch about elected officials not doing what they think needs to be done. It’s why we’re number one in deaths and infections from covid, despite only being around 4 percent of the world’s population, it’s why we can’t get stupid motherfucking assholes to wear a mask and stay the fuck out of everyone’s personal space, why they want everything open NOW starting 6 months ago. It’s why our whole economy is based on low wage workers being undervalued and underpaid when those jobs are what make the actual economy in the real world work, pay people less, expect more and make sure it gets done NOW, even if safety and basic human rights are ignored. The whole damned country needs to take a breath when this mess is gone (and hopefully more than a few of them behind bars, not holding my breath on that either) and re-evaluate the definitions of community, being United, and what the fuck actually is important over the long haul. We’re all tired for different reasons that all lead back to the same thing. The myth of “self-made” anyone needs to DIAF too, that has spawned a lack of compassion and empathy that is also a root cause of a lot of pain and unnecessary suffering.

I think the pollsters are actually underestimating Biden. I expect Biden to over-perform his final polls. I think Greenfield beats Ernst, Biden wins the state, and the four Dems there hold their seats. Unfortunately, Steve King’s seat will stay Republican but I think Iowa is Biden and Greenfield’s for the taking. And then one of the Congressional Dems will run against Grassley in 2022 or a replacement should he retire.

I don’t want to sound arrogant here but I think most of us could do a better job analyzing what’s going on politically than a lot of the checkmarks on Twitter including Nate Silver. Not only are the rats abandoning ship, but the rats-in-robes are too.

The article is much, much less than what it looks like. He’s not endorsing anyone, but he is strongly hinting that Trump is unacceptable as a human being because he’s just a bad man, and Biden is unacceptable because he supports abortion rights. As far as I am concerned, Piper’s trying to set himself up for the post-election environment. He wants to be able to say, “But I told you your guy was bad” while at the same time going after Biden over abortion.

This is what I said to Piper directly:

And I just let some of his followers have it (behind the button):

At no time does Piper question his many, many assumptions, starting with how he sees women. We *know* what brings down the abortion rate, which is access to comprehensive sex education and contraception. However, Piper would be opposed to this, because it gives women too many choices—like the choice not to get pregnant whenever and the choice to tell a sexual partner NO. Rather, he wants to hem women in.

If Piper pisses some of *his* worshipers off (oh yes, he has a fan club verging on idolatry), I have no problem with that. But he’s not changing his mind on anything. He’s just trying to look prescient. He’s full of shit and his hatred of women continues unabated.

Beto did everything right. It’s just tough for a Democrat to win in a consistently deep red state.

He should be Biden’s SecDef. He’s got real world experience both in managing and - literal - boots on the ground as a soldier.

Exactly. And here we are less than two weeks out from the presidential election and Biden and Trump are neck and neck in Texas. I think Trump is slightly favored because of historical factors but I will not be shocked if Biden wins it either. Trump has done a lot to alienate suburbia.

Like the first debate, I will not listen to one second of that whiny, nasal trash voice of his. I’ll get my commentary from you and follow along that way.

re: #248 NO SMOCKING GUN!

I mentioned earlier that House seat polling may indicate a bigger Biden win than national presidential polling? I tried it on Iowa because its small. fivethirtyeight.com has Biden forecast as -0.3 behind Trump there, but the 4 D house candidates are forecast to win by an average of 5.1 points. I think there may be something to this!

Wow. Just did the Az House races. Biden is forecast by fivethirtyeight.com to win by 2.9, while the D House candidates average forecast is +10.

To watch the upcoming Trainwreck or to not watch.

That is the question.

I like my TV so maybe not.

Watching Donnie meltdown… Priceless.

Decisions, decisions.

I’ll continue my practice — reading comments here rather than watching live, listening to CNN/MSNBC post-debate discussion — and then, depending on the analysis, watching a youtube video tomorrow.

re: #174 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.

SATAN: “I don’t want this one. Is there any possible way you could take him?”
GOD: [Horrified look.] “Are you out of your fucking gourd, Lucifer? They’re two of the most evil men alive. I CANNOT have them up here.”
SATAN: “Fuck. Um. Well, I guess they’ll live forever.”
GOD: “I … really can’t condone that, think about the innocent souls that will suffer.”
SATAN: “Do I look like I’m full of compassion for those worms?”
GOD: “…Good point. Ugh. I’ll allow it until I can build a special place in Hell for them to keep them separate.”
SATAN: “Pleasure doing business with you.”

In Dante’s Inferno, which is more theologically astute than it sometimes gets credit for, Dante is informed that some of the spirits he sees down there are for people who haven’t died yet. Their souls have simply already descended, even though the bodies still walk above. I could see Trump being in this mode.
