What they count on, and what they’ve been fairly successful with so far, is pushing hard on these issues that attract the single-issue ‘values’ voters, like my dad’s parents were, but which the average person puts fairly low down on their scale of importance. So yeah, many people may disagree with the extremist position, but they care more about promises of tax cuts or magical jobs or whatever. That’s how the modern GOP works. That is why it has pushed to the extremes.

I’m trying to be somewhat positive, hopeful that this time around, folks will notice that the extremes are no longer coming with “exceptions.” Like I said, in elections past, we got the whole “rape/incest/safety” bit from even the wackiest of candidates. This time around, they’re all taking some matter of pride in throwing that bit to the wayside. Hell, 4 out of 7 of the candidates were up there at the “Pro-Life debate” last week saying that they’re okay with pushing the “personhood” BS.
